Hi chipkid, my 4 year old daughter has had several general anaesthetics and has always been fine after them. She normally wakens up chatting and wanting toast. Our hosp offers sleep by mask, they call it blowing up balloon, which she did not like and wakened from hysterical, or they use a canula in hand and put them to sleep with injection, to which she wakens from chirpy. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Ck - my dd had a hernia op 5+ years ago when she was about 15months. She was absolutely fine with the anaesthetic, but I found it a huge shock watching her go under and become lifeless. I came out sobbing.

Probably wasn't helped by seeing the father of the previous patient - little 4 year old girl - coming out very shaken with tears rolling down his cheeks. He looked very like Mr T from the A team,- love is love, doesn't matter how big/small you are!

I'm sure your dd will be fine but probably clingy but then that can be nice sometimes, can't it?!

Hi My dd is nearly 8, shes also had loads of anthestics, in our hosp they normally let me put mask on her, I give her a big hug put it on and kiss her until shes over, she struggles quite a bit, but she dosen't remember anything after, so you just have to be strong
Unlike Karen36 my dd always grumpy after, them once she gets a wee sleep shes great
we've tried a premed a couple of times but some people say that makes them grumpy too

Good luck remember be strong you can have a wee cry after shes off to sleep

operation sucessful and dd home asleep now. She had an extreme reaction to the general-like a wild animal for a full 40 minutes when she came round-she had to be restrained by three people. It took 2 hours and 10 minutes to calm her down fully afterwards. Thankfully she doesn't seem to remember that now. The ward sister said that her reactions were normal-although she had never experienced anything as extreme as hers.
