Can low weight / size in a 4 mnth old be indicative of anything ?

A friend in France has a baby who is quite small. 14 llbs or less and 4mnths old. I wondered if this was cause for concern or not ?

Ds2 is 18lbs and 17mths! If baby is feeding and sleeping well all should be ok, if they are 'tracking' on those dreaded charts that usually means all is well

Are the parents small?

I got in a real state about DD's weight being low on the scale. But her grandparents on DH's side are both under 5 feet tall. DH is only 5'6" which is not tall for a man.

If the baby is eating and healthy then she should be fine. Tell the mum not to get neurotic about it as that will only result in the child having eating problems. I did when DD dropped to, and stayed on, the 8th centile; I got so worried and freaked out and tried to force her to eat more which only caused more stress. It's important not to get obsessed with those charts. It's not a contest about who has the biggest baby. And having the biggest baby doesn't make someone a better mum.

Thanks - problem is (or isn't!) - parents are huge ! Don't think parents are panicking - I just wondered if there was anything that could cause this, or anything they should look out for / be aware of.

DS1 was on the 0.2nd centile for years - now a healthy happy 6 year old.

In his case he was premature and so was born small, just never really caught up. Still small but not as noticeably. He was tested for a number of conditions in the early years, from memory cystic fibrosis and coeliac disease (?) but in the end no specific reason was found for his poor growth.

All of mine have touched 2nd centile and below at soe point; ds4 was on 0.2nd, look at my profile and you wills ee how well he's doing, a few steps at nine months!

It's probably compltely normal for the baby however in this country it owuld warrant a check up if it wasnt the centile they were born on, which for mine has been clear every time.

how premmie was baby? They should be judging his weight with ref to EDD not actual birth forr first two years.

My DD was 15lbs at 11 months or thereabouts and is now 17lbs at nearly 13 months, not sure what she was at 4 months but something low! 14lbs at 4 months does not sound very small unless he was huge at birth and not growing.

My DH is 6ft 2, and his dad and brothers are all 6ft 2 or taller, but I am not huge so paed just said DD is taking after me (her twin brother has been 6lbs heavier than her for months, but was only 0.5lbs heavier at birth).

Ok so then I had to check what she weighed at approx 4 months. Her red book says at 16 weeks she weighed 10.5lbs. She was three weeks early though.

myjobismum - I was the same. I was esp worried as DDs twin was growing so quickly and she wasn't. But she was always happy and healthy and not even skinny, just small all over. She still wears some 3-6 month stuff now, although mainly 6-9 and even 9-12! Now I know she is ok I am perfectly happy she is small. Everything thinks it makes her esp cute!

Must admit it was me worrying about her weight and not HV etc. I was asking them to come and weigh her!

My dd3 only doubled her birthweight at 13 months old!! and she was on the 98th percentile when she was born...She was always happy and healthy and ate well but the gp referred us to a consultant who saw her every month for about 6 months..was pointless really but at least they took notice of something that could have been a sign of something wrong...now she is perfectly formed and quite tall but she is still slim.

Ds was 980g (about 2 lb) at birth and about 7kg at 12 months.

He's still on the small side for a three year old but perfectly healthy and becasue his growth was fine no-one seemed to worry too much.
