How should I treat a stye?

Dd1 has a stye on her lower eyelid. What should I do to treat it? Is a visit to the Doctor necessary or can it be treated at home? Are they infectious? TIA!!

Put a hot compress on it a few times a day and it should reduce in size. Don't think you need to see the doctor unkess its particularly sore for her

I had one recently, googled it and found some suggestions to put teabags on (used, but cooled). Mine was quite small and I didn't bother, but the reviews on the net all raved about it.

Thanks!! Will try those suggestions

sounds strange I know, but if you have a gold wedding ring, rub it on the stye and it will go away. Its the only thing that works for me.

Ledodgy · 20/01/2009 23:10

I agree with snuffle the gold ring thing does work!

llareggub · 20/01/2009 23:21

Spooky!

I've just come online to google styes and treatment and blinking 'eck, a thread of styes right here on mumsnet.

my ds1 is 11 and seems to suffer with stye's when he is over tired, with his last one i went to chemist and got some 'golden eye ointment', it worked a treat and will definitely keep some in for future use!

TsarChasm · 27/01/2009 14:03

Yes agree too re the gold ring trick.

UnrealisticExpectations · 01/02/2009 14:28

My mum always got me to rub mine with her gold wedding ring when I was little. I never ever got one that got any worse than a small red lump and they seemed to go away really quickly. So, yes, I would say rubbing with a gold wedding ring (possibly because a wedding ring was usually 18ct rather than 9ct?) always worked for me when I was little. I was just Googling it now to see if there was any evidence for it as my little boy has got one now. Can't find any evidence, but I'm still going to try it.

I thought the gold wedding ring was an old wives tale but it works for me!

Does anyone know how to tell the difference between a stye and blepharitis? My DS has a red lower eyelid but no lump - not sure if I should see how he goes (sadly my wedding ring is platinum!), or get it checked by my GP in case it is going to get worse. He's got a cold too, so maybe this is something to do with it.
