My 2 year old has had a continual cough for a week what can I do?

All day and night she's coughing and spluttering. It started as a very chesty cough and now seems a little dryer. Previously Dr's have told me that cough medicines are a waste of time so does anyone have any miracle solutions?

Steam bathroom to help ease the chest, that works well for DD when she gets a horrid cough. Lots of liquids to ease throat as it gets painful. Probably not a miracle cure, but might help a bit?
