9 month old twins with coughs

Can anyone suggest any remedies for coughs in 9 month olds. Have tried Calpol and Tixylix (as advised by HV) but to no avail. Have also heard that Tixylix can cause young children to be hyper? Is that correct? Any suggestions on an alternative?

My gp told me the cough mixtures don't work - he recommended using the childrens olbas oil and just waiting it out...
Both my dds get coughs when they're teething (saliva gets stuck in their throat) so sometimes calpol works as well..
