17-month old has real problem pooing

ds has always had problems pooing, but I'm starting to wonder if it's something more than just normal constipation. Whenever a poo is brewing he gets incredibly upset for quite a few hours beforehand, then when the poo does come out he screams as if he's in absolute agony. Often the poo is very slightly blood-streaked. He eats lots of fruit, but not very much veg as he turns his nose up at it. Should I take him to the doctor?

Yes, take him to the doctor.

He sounds like my DS who is two-and-a-half now. He eats well, with lots of fruit and veg and is addicted to yoghurt (the live stuff) - all stuff that should make for great poos.

But he finds it really painful. Our doctor suggests he has a bit of a sluggish bowel. To stop it becoming a greater problem (it seems he had started trying to hold off pooing because it was so painful) he has been prescribed Lactulose. It works for him, he doesn't need it all the time/every day. But when he does need it, it has been a life-saver.

Can't remember exactly when it became clear to me that it REALLY was a problem for him, but I suspect it was at a similar age to your DS - around 18 months.

DS suffered with constipation when he was 2 yrs old. Horrible. It was a vicious circle of pooing hurting him so he began to retain it for a few days which makes it hard and more uncomfortable. The blood is poss because it is cutting his back passage as he poos. DS had a great diet, was very active and drank loads of water but like swampster doctor prescribed lactulose so I would def take him. DS was fine once we got him going again (2 weeks) and now has no problems.
