need advice on chicken pox

I know every kid gets it and its better to get them young (keep getting told this)
My dd has them everywhere but they are worse in and around her flower, her eyes and in her mouth. What can i do. it breaks my heart that she is so miserable and i can do nothing

prof - steady on it's only been 20 mins!

How many days is it since the first spot appeared? I found the night of the 4th day to be the worst with both my DDs.

I bathed them with a sock full of oatmeal in the bath then dried carefully and put on some antiseptic and talc which had calamine in it.

Hope your DD is better soon, it's hard seeing them so spotty.

Oh, poor DD. I DS had it quite badly too. Have you taken her to the GP? Or perhaps call NHS direct? They might have a suggestion for something to ease her pain - perhaps something to put in her bath or something?

We were told to use calmine, but it seemed useless to me.

In the meantime, calpol or neurofen is good, keep her topped up.

Does she have spots actually in her eyes/inside her eyelids? If so, you must take her to the GP as there is a risk of corneal damage. My (awful) GP initially refused DS an appoinment "because we don't want an infectious child at the surgery", but on the advive on my GP mate I insisted they see him and look at his cornea using some drops of dye and a special coloured light. (He was fine, but did have conjuctivitus poor love)

Ok here is what worked for my DDs when they had the pox;

Homeopathic remedy for the itching. Sorry can't remember the name but my local chemist was able to recommend it so it can't be that obscure.

Oatmeal in bath. Make a porridge tea by soaking oatmeal in a sock or similar in the bath until the water is cloudy and slippery. (works wonders).

Cammomile tea with honey. Make tea and dab onto spots. Soothes and cleanses. Be heavy handed with the honey even though it is sticky.

Plenty of fluids and try not to give painkillers as they supress the healing fever.

sorry but im stressed and hate seeing her like this. She got her first spot yesterday. The spots are on her bottom eyelid where you would put eye pencil. her eyes are watering a lot. She also has them on her tonsils and down her throat. should i be worried about this. They are up her nose and in her ears and basicaly everywhere else

its cool prof, of course you hate to see your DD suffer.

Take her to the GP tomorrow. If need be, insist they see her. She is probably totally fine, but its not worth the risk to her eyesight. Tell them you want them to use Fluosine drops (not sure of the spelling) in her eyes and look for damage to her cornea. (Of course if your GP is any good he/she wont need telling! - but I'm so glad I had a mate who gave me the low down as my GP is a ).

The oatmeal things sounds a good idea - I hadn't heard of that before.

Is she sleeping now?

Also, keep her fluids up and something in her stomach...milkshake or smoothie if she doesn't feel up to eating. My DH got the pox last year (then gave them to DS!) and got really ill from not eating and drinking enough.

How old is your DD?

nope still up and has been since 4 this morning. tried to give her medised (antihistamine and seditive) BUT SHE WAS HAVING NONE OF IT AND Spilt the whole bottle (sorry for caps lol) she is 3 and knows she doesnt like it. She is the same as me and just wont take medicine

My DD1 had a spot on her bottom eyelid where you'd put eyepencil, i'm afraid she's still missing a couple of eyelashes there but no-one else looks as hard as me or would notice. She did have a lot of spots, more than any other child in her class as far as I could tell from their scars...

It's hard, try and follow some of the advice here, it helps even if only to help you feel you are doing something...

yeah. I sat nd cried for an hour and dh said it is just chicken pox there is nothing you can do and every kid gets them. think im going to go to bed and see if she settles with me there. Ill try the oatmeal in the morning and check back to see if there is anymore advice

hey, I am missing a couple of eyelashes from having the pox when I was a kid! Never bthered me in the slightest ad nobody notices.

Prof, do try and get some rest. Bribe her with anything to take some calpol - she must be exhausted poor love. Might she prefer neurofen? Think its orange flavour -my kids prefer it. Might she take it mixed with some squash?

Wish for your sake they immunised against pox in the UK She will be ok though..but do take her to the GP tomorrow, sounds like she has a nasty dose of it.

they do imunise and she had it. we wventualy got to sleep at 2 and thankfully thats us just up. Bought ice lollys and stuff to help her and it was the tesco guy that woke us up

Chemist recommended Piriton to a friends son who had chickenpox. (not sure about the ages restrictions on this ). This seemed to help. Horrible disease if they get it badly. Hope it clears up soon.

I had a calamine lotion with an antihistamine in it when mine had cp. Can't remember what it was called ...caladryl I think. It was quite effective and ds1 had it much as you describe your dd. He was older though (7)

Can I also recommend pyriton syrup, it is an anti histamine and will stop your dd fron scratching quite as much.

The other advice you have already been given is absolutely spot on and your dd should be feeling much better soon.
