Glue ear?

2 weeks ago I got a text from DH at work saying that DS had "snot" coming out of his ear - in his hair, on his clothes etc. It happened again a couple of times (always when he;d been out in the cold) and so we took him to the doctor, who was utterly baffled. Took a swab, sent it off and said to make an appt for today. Went back today, swab results not back, and doc still baffled. The discharge isn't as much now, but is pretty much continuous rather than single incidents iyswim.
He's always been well, no indicators of infection, in fact recently he's been utterly fine for the first time in ages.
I asked today if it could be glue ear, and was told quite firmly "No, I don't think so". He's been prescribed ABs. From everything I've read, it is glue ear, and ABs will be useless (am going to give them though - don't worry). Why is doc so adamant?

Sounds very much like a perforated ear drum. However, there would usually be some pain or discomfort associated with this.

Yes, there hasn't been anything like that. He's been fiddling with his ear a bit more, but that's probably the sensation, certainly doesn't seem to be bothering him.

The abs would be to cover infection for perforated ear drum. That's not to say that there isn't some background glue ear.

How old is he?

StealthPoHoHoHo · 30/12/2008 20:56

ah right, thanks. He's 20 months
Definitely going to give the ABs. Just ironic that when he had a D&V bug for 6 weeks which led to a raging temp and a very ill child we had to chew their arm for them - today they were handed out like smarties!

It does sound like perforated ear drum. I'm an expert patient - I had many perf ear drums as a child caused by infection. I also had glue ear and grommets and so have both dd's!

oh dear sounds as though you know a lot more than you'd like to!
Thanks for your help
