arrghh managed to get ds sunburned today

he was slathered (I thought) in sunblock and had a hat on but tonight I can see very red marks where I must have missed some spots. He has one by his nose, one near his eye and one small patch on his arm. He has only complained about the arm one as he rubbed it when lying down. He has had a cool bath but should I put anything on it or just leave it be???

Maybe some aftersun if you have some? Or if not, a light moisturiser to stop the skin drying out.

sudocrem is good for sun burn.
do you have that in nz?

thanks, not sure we can get aftersun but think sudocream or similar is available but can't get it until tomorrow. do you think moisturiser will be ok on it, it won't sting?

If you've got something unperfumed it should be ok.

NHS website says:

Water

Cool the skin by sponging it with lukewarm water or by having a cool shower or bath.

Drink plenty of fluids to replace the water lost through sweating in the sun, and to cool down. Do not drink alcohol, because it will dehydrate you further.

Moisturisers

For mild sunburn, apply a moisturising lotion or a special aftersun cream from a pharmacy. Aftersun helps to cool the skin as well as moisturising and relieving the feeling of tightness. Calamine lotion can also be used to relieve itching and soreness.

Painkillers

For adults, painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can help relieve pain and reduce swelling.

yawning - I found in the supermarkets here in Aus - near the sunscreens - aloe vera cooling after sun lotion. If not try the chemist.

thanks everyone. You have reminded me I have an aloevera plant so will coat this on his arm and near nose, don't want to put anything too close to his eye though. Feel a bit awful that he got burned, it was stonking hot but I thought he was well covered

i started using the coloured sunscreen that you can see where it is as it goes clear as you rub it in. My dds are wrigglers and this was fab.

will look out for that here, do they do a low allergenic version, do you have a brand name?

I'm sure I remember reading something about aloe vera direct from the plant not being a terribly good idea - can cause reactions IIRC. Extract of aloe vera is different. Sorry!
