Should I bother the doc again?

My 11 month old ds spiked a temp of 40 on Sunday night, and after taking him to the OOH clinic at the hospital, he was disagnosed with an ear infection - his first, he's never actually been ill with a temp before. The doc gave us antibiotics which he's been taking since Sunday evening. Yesterday he still had a temp, although it didn't go above 39, and I'd been hoping that by today he'd be showing signs of improvement. His temp is a bit lower (it hasn't gone above 38.5 so far today, although it didn't get high yesterday until late afternoon), but in himself he's more miserable that he's been all along. He's slept lots (which I'm hoping is good), but when he's awake he's grizzly (but alert) and refusing to eat. You'd think he'd be happier given that his temp is lower. Is it worth taking him back to the gp do you think, or am I being too hasty? it's just horrible seeing him like this - he's normally such a smiley little boy

Try to relax...If the temperature is going down that really is the best sign that the infection is clearing. Its not even 2 days of medication, just make sure he is hydrated as he can survive without food for a while.

There's not more the gp can do..these things take time, its just horrible watching your own child get ill, if it were you, you probably wouldn't worry so much!

Sorry he is ill, anti biotics rarely work for ear infections as they work in the blood and the ear does not have a big blood supply. My son had years of them and in the end we binned the anti biotics. We put warm (not hot) olive oil dropped into the ear, you can crush some garlic and heat it up in the oil then strain it and drip the oil into the ear, heat the garlic, dont fry it, again not hot oil. Also a warm hot water bottle against the ear. Bin any dairy products until the infection is clear and I would consider moving over to goats milk or another sort of milk. Avoid mucus forming foods such as dairy and bananas. Increase vitamin C and wait out the infection. I don't use calpol to bring down a temp as the temp is the bodys way of clearing the bug and bringing it down hampers the body. I know this is against NHS advice but Its what I and others do. He will grow out of them, eventually. Getting off cows milk makes a massive differnce.

Regards
