Hi temp in 12 month old

DS has got a D and V bug. He's also got a hi temp 38.5 and is V sleepy.

I've just checked on NHS direct as I'm not sure what the implications of a high temp are. One of the questions was is your child sleepy. When I said yes they told me to ring an ambulance Seems a little extreme to say the least, I guess they are on the look out for menigitis ?

A little reassurance anyone...

sleepy is normal
Lethargic and non responsive isn't
There is a difference
Temp alone is not an indicator of anything other that your childisfighting an illness.
My dd and ds2 are trotting round nowboth with temp of 39 but are coughing/snotty but otherwise normal

But worth getting gp checkedfor dehydration etc
Whenyiu say sleepy? Can you wake him?

Can you get any calpol down him to bring the temp down? If you cant and his temp goes much higher i would get him checked out TBH.

My 4yo had this last week. By evening she had temp of 39.8 and couldn't keep water / calpol down so no chance of getting temp down. NHS 24 got us OOH doctors appt and she was admitted to hosp overnight. Ambulance may be a bit over the top but you should definitely get it checked out. In our case it was only this winter vomiting bug but wouldn't like to take a chance.

My DS had very bad D and V at the same age, and went floppy too - it was due to dehydration. I would get him checked out tho tbh

Thanks for the advice everyone. I took him to the docs yesterday who said that he wasn't dehydrated and told me what to look for , so I'm happy on that front.

He is responsive and I can wake him but he just wants to sleep all the time. I'll keep a close eye.

This is the first proper illness he's had - it's horrible

glad he is coping fine
It is scary
I had my 3rd ( and toughest imo) child admitted a few weeks ago with severe pneumonia.
Utterly terrifying
It is always hard
Have houseful of 3 sick(flu and cough and occasional vomit) kids plus ME atm and it is hideous
