how long does it take the Ovex Worm treatment to work?

We noticed wednesday night that DS had worms and on thursday we all had an Ovex tablet.

I have now noticed that DD has them (she might have ahd them all along but she was refusing to let me check her bottom). Should the thursday afternoon tablet have worked by now do you think? Will I need to give her another one? DS isn't bothered by them at all (he just eats loads) but DD is getting very tearful about what I now know is an itchy bottom (she's been saying her bottom is sore but she's only 3 and so I assume she just doesn't recognise the itchy feeling).

TIA

I think its supposed to take AT LEAST 24 hours, but can be up to 48 hours, so she should be ok. That said, if it was me (a worm hater by nature ) I would probably give her an extra tablet now: Ovex hardly goes into the system at all, so its not going to hurt her. Either way, do dose everyone again in 2 weeks time from teh first tablet.

Meantime, you can put vaseline/sudacreme on her bottom to protect it from the worst of the itch - or so I've seen suggested here, not tried it yet!

thanks Elibean. I'll go and put some vaseline on now while she's asleep in the hope that she won't wake in the night again. I called my out of hours surgery just a few moments ago and the doctor I spoke to said not to give the other tablet until 14 days are up even if I can still see the threadworms . Was she perhaps being cautious? The leaflet in the box does say the same but that's for if the worms return whereas this little buggers haven't even left yet! What might be a side effect of me giving DD another tablet too soon?

They're certainly telling you the recommended treatment, and they're probably right in that it does take a day or two to kill them.

I don't think there are any significant side effects, but I'm not a medic and don't know for sure....just done some research on the internet, and have tried it on myself in bout of paranoia when dd1 had them.

Everything I've read says mebendazole is very poorly absorbed into the gut, and mostly stays in the gut where it acts on the worms and not the host.

But maybe you could give it another 24 hours, given that she's taken one so recently?

well DD managed to get through the night without the worms disturbing her so perhaps the tablet has worked out. I'll know for sure nearer tea time today. Fingers crossed.

I know this is old but my partner (20) and myself (18) have somehow found ourselves with them and I'm having a nightmare. I've already been diagnosed with OCD and it's hygiene-related. If there was ever anything wrong with me or I hadn't washed enough I'd freak out and be completely unable to function... so you can imagine how well I'm coping with this...
Took Ovex two days ago and have completely cleaned our house: all clothes, bedding, towels, etc, hoovered absolutely everything, bleached the entire bathroom, have not put my hand in my mouth since I discovered their existence (that was fun).

I had suffered from an itchy anus for a fortnight+ prior and had thought it to be from bathing too much or a dietary thing but whatever I tried gave no relief. One night I had put moisturiser there because I was just so frustrated and completely unable to sleep. I was cleaning out the moisturiser and saw the minging little thing wiggling around in the moisturiser. Naturally, I cried and googled for the next few hours. I phoned the GP and made an appointment but it was 9 days later. I phoned NHS 24 and they told me to get medicine from the pharmacist. I got a family pack of "Ovex" and took mine right away, and gave my partner his when he got home from work after we had unleashed our OCD full force on the entire house. It's two days later and I'm still crying and googling. I'm freaking out so much and I need some reassurance I will get over this! People on forums talk about nightmarish situations in which they try everything but can't shake them... or after taking Ovex they start coming back with a vengeance/come out in mass numbers! I cried when I saw one... had a panic attack the next day whilst cleaning down there when I saw three at once... I really don't think I can handle this. I've not been able to work or... do anything except cry and clean really. I noticed someone asking earlier if it was safe to take another dose before two weeks but frankly I'm positive I will. Whatever the side effects could be, they are NOT worse than this inability to achieve peace of mind. I can handle 'stomach pain' and 'headaches' - I've had them for years. I'd even take slight organ damage if it meant I never have to see another threadworm!!

I honestly feel so sick. I'm doing everything I can but I'm concerned my partner isn't. I can't imagine how you are all handling it with little children :( I want to set myself and the house on fire. If anyone has any tips to help calm my brain or little suggestions to help with the process to make me feel as though I'm doing all I can e.g things to eat, maybe I should take a laxative? I've also been suffering constipation this past week and have assumed it to be related... but I imagine once I take Ovex they'll have to 'pass' this way which makes me more worried about not being able to 'pass'.

OH, GOD. THEY'RE GOING TO HAVE TO COME OUT OF ME IN BULK NO MATTER WHAT I DO.

I AM IN MY OWN PERSONAL HELL.

Hi MissLTG ,
Reading your comments on your battle with threadworm was heartbreaking.. I'm sorry to hear what you went / are going through? I find myself in a similar situation where I literally don't know where to turn or who to talk to.. I'm a dad with a 3 year old son and unfortunately he has passed it onto me.. i don't know how to cope. I've taken Ovex & blizted the house over & over.. yet 3/4 days now and I don't feel any different.. still suffering. I made the mistake of reading all the horror stories online and now I'm seriously depressed. I didn't know if any mum's out there have dealt with this and could maybe reassure me that this will pass and that I'm overreacting.. ?

Marie788 · 08/08/2020 20:48

Hi HandsomeArch16,
Little ones been suffering with this, as have I. Did you get rid of them, and any tips? Took some ovex liquid yesterday, and still finding horrible little wriggles in my stool. Sad

BBS20 · 18/12/2020 19:42

@Marie788 did you manage to get rid of them? I had a stool sample sent off to the Drs and it came back negative which is crazy considering I am still seeing them. I see small egg type things too which is odd.
Please give me so reassurance x

Toagoodfuture · 29/12/2020 14:22

@BBS20 have you managed to sort your problem?

BBS20 · 29/12/2020 15:43

@Toagoodfuture Unfortunately I've still got them. Not as intense as before but they're still managing to ruin my evening. I have now decided to take ovex weekly and see how I get on.

How are you getting on? I hope you're having better luck than I am.

Toagoodfuture · 30/12/2020 12:07

@BBS20 hopefully it clears up soon. My daughter seems fine no more itch going to give 2nd dose on day 12 to her. I only ever seen one on her butt and non ever since so hopefully it was just a mild case🤞 The first time she caught them was 6 months ago I gave her tablets then started giving the whole family something called Diatomaceous Earth FOOD GRADE you can order from Amazon give it daily every day for atleast 90 days we was all fine until she now returned back to school caught again 😔 I’m going to speak to school as soon as there back in can’t keep putting up with this it’s horrendous

BBS20 · 30/12/2020 13:25

@Toagoodfuture Thank you, I really hope so too. Glad to hear your daughter is feeling better and it was only mild. My children are also fine and my partner never had any symptoms to begin with (but we all took the ovex). I'll try the DE again. I did take it initially for around 10 days but then stopped. I've been taking garlic, pineapple, pumpkin seeds and occassionally carrots. Hoping all of this will help.

Toagoodfuture · 30/12/2020 13:54

@BBS20 yes it’s a long term thing the DE it takes a while to kill the bastards!! just stick with it. we all take it every day anyway just because if it’s health benefits anyway. Just stick with everything I’m sure ul be rid soon.

Toagoodfuture · 30/12/2020 14:42

@BBS20 also book in for a few colonics
