How long does the current chesty-flu virus last?

DD has had fever, cough and flu symptoms since last saturday. Although she seems a little better her temp is still 39.5 after six days.

Everyone says this bug is doing the rounds. So how long did it last in your DCs???

Ds has been a week so far and still poorly - he is not usually ill, so it must be bad for him to be laid up.

Are you any better today artichokes?

SpacePuppy · 05/12/2008 19:35

ds was off food for about 7 days, drank vast amount of orange juice though. (had a low grade temp. nasty cough) followed by one week of a little bit of coughing that improved everyday. He slept alot during the day as the coughing kept him up at night. Also he started eating about 2 days after the week and is still eating like there is no tomorrow. He is 3 by the way.

kkey21 · 05/12/2008 19:36

My ds is 13wks old and he has had it since 7wks old all symptons except temperature

My 3 yr old is suffering now with it (temp high since last Sat) and has had it on/off since September too....

artichokes · 05/12/2008 19:36

Thanks for asking Nicky. I am feeling a bit better physically and alot better emotionally.

Hopefully I am kicking this bug quicker than poor DD.

DS was ill with it for about 10 days. He's still not exactly tip top but no longer feverish etc. I think it's a bad one...

nickytwotimes · 05/12/2008 19:39

Glad to hear it artichokes.
Dd will no doubt follow suit with lots of cuddles.

That was the only redeeming feature of this bug for us - the cuddles from a normally bouncing-off-the-walls toddler. He seems a lot better today - no lunchtime slobbing on the sofa.

Gingemejinglybells · 05/12/2008 19:39

ds3 has had a horrid cough since last Saturday. High temp Monday night been off school since. ds4 Has had the same cough since Wednesday and non stop runny nose. Now ds5 has it and so do I Its a pure snot fest in our house.
Doesn't help DH being all jolly and going on about the flu jab he had at work

onepieceoflollipop · 05/12/2008 19:45

kkey21 you poor things. feel really sorry for you.

fwiw none of us (2 dds, me and dh) have been unwell for 2 weeks on and off. This chesty/fluey thing seems to take on average a couple of weeks to get over.

It really gets you down. Sympathies to all, especially those with wakeful babies/los. I think that I would have recovered by now but some nights I only get a couple of hours sleep.

artichokes · 05/12/2008 21:31

Thanks for your replies. I am shocked at how long this lasts but at least I know DD is not alone in having to battle it this long.

KKey - poor, poor you are your tiny boy. I hope he gets better soon.

dd1 woke up with 39.5 today again, for the sixth day in a row, and coughed away all day....but she slept all afternoon, and seems a lot brighter tonight. Still a bit warm at bed time, but have a feeling she's turned the corner.

GP warned me it could last up to 10 days, and thought it might be 'real' flu....which would explain why dh and dd2 haven't caught it: they're vaccinated, due to asthma/laryngomalacia respectively.

I had it very mildly (also vaccinated) last weekend, the fever lasted 24 hours but the cough/cold is still around, though much less.

Hope all the LOs, babies especially, are ok soon....

kkey21 · 07/12/2008 18:40

My 3yr old now seems much better (apart from nose candles!)but bubba boy is worse, again, really chesty and snotty...Poor lamb is still happy though-he doesn't moan.... He is still feeding fine which is a good indication for me. Hope he improves at some bloody point. My Mum reckons he is astmastic (sorry...sp)
The doctor gave me a prescription just incase he deteriorates quickly like before (he would go limp from coughing so much)but don't want to give him antibiotics unecessarily......
Bless he is such a bruiser and a happy little chap and shouldn't have to put up with this. Over half his young life he has been ill now.

Hope you all feel better soon. xxx

Gingemejinglybells · 08/12/2008 09:58

kkey that sounds very good. Your little boy sounds a real little fighter. Wishing him better real soon.
ds3 went back to school today after his week off. Still coughing but much better.
ds4 is going to the docs today. Very sore throat and conjunctivitis
ds5 was sick last night . Lots of flem but not real sick iykwim? Good in a way because its getting it out of his system.
Just seems to be taking so long to clear doesn't it?

Elibean · 08/12/2008 10:04

dd1 went back to school this morning, tired and croaky, and still coughing a bit, but much brighter. Its the 9th day.

Kkeys, I'm glad your 3yr old is better, and that your babe is feeding - that is definitely a good sign with my dd2, its when she stops eating and gets that pale, hollow-eyed look that I start the ABs! (we get given them to have on hand too).

Elibean · 08/12/2008 10:04

Gingeme, hope the younger sibs follow their big brother and get well soon too

purpleduck · 08/12/2008 10:16

Mine had it for a good week and a half, but they are still not %100

Madsometimes · 08/12/2008 12:13

dd1 (8) had it for 7 days. She seemed fine at home, so after 3 days she went into school which was a BIG mistake. She went down very badly, her temp spiking to 41 and she became very confused. The school was not very pleased with me, and I was not very pleased with myself either.

It is a very nasty virus, and I did wonder myself if it was real flu. She went back to school the following week, but I kept her off on the Monday morning because the class goes swimming and I did not let her do any after school activities for the next week.

Gingemejinglybells · 08/12/2008 18:39

Thankyou Elibean.
Took ds4 to the docs this afternoon. Turns out he has a throat infection. Has conjunctivitis too. He has anti biotics.
The doc also said ds5 has a viral infection and to carry on with the fluids and Calpol.
Ah well another week of snot fest then

mankymummy · 08/12/2008 18:44

god its awful isnt it? DS temp just topped 104... couldnt get docs appt today, am hoping for one tomorrow.

can recommend ice pops for those not eating and with high temp... its the only thing thats perking my little one up...

123ken · 08/12/2008 20:06

This all reads very familiar..have been sitting here feeling guilty as 3 separate days last week I took dd to nursery as she seemed fine only to be called in the afternoon as she had raised temp and miserable. Runny nose and cough for a week but fever comes and goes, and she will be right as rain one minute and hot and cuddly the next. Don't want to take her to nursery again and get called (feel like a rubbish mum and not fair on her or nursery) but don't want to keep her off if she is well. What to do?

Debsicle · 08/04/2009 10:05

My 14 month old started off with cough about 10 days ago. Last Wednesday, his cough just seemed to be constant so went to drs. Viral infection. Two days later Friday, conjunctivitus so now has drops which are a nightmare. Slept 13 hrs that night.
Feel guilty then because we took him away for weekend and his temperatrure rose and he was right narky, very clingy and was so distressed threw up over me and on hotel floor. Nice! Daddy doesnt do cleaning up sock either!
WQhen got home Sunday night was so hot we ended up at Badger clinic: temperature of 39.9. Would only give him ibuprofen as its viral.Said he has a multilayered virus. With his back teeth coming in, cough, cold (he is very very snotty) conjunctivitus he is very down, sleepy and just wants mommy but then next minute he is playing and smiling.
His temperature is still going down but he is still warm but he is now eating again. So its been a week...how much longer..we are going on holiday in 5 days!
Do humidifiers work? Cold or warm mist?
