Bleeding belly button - 6 week old

Can anyone help? My 6 week old has what I can only describe as a flap of skin in her belly button which has been pink but today has bled and looks like the colour of a blood clot. The rest of the belly button has long healed. Worried this could be a hernia / intestine???? Help any ideas (taking her to the health visitor tomorrow).

Hi,
My baby is 5 wks and a half old and had the same thing 3 days ago. Took her to see GP, spoke to health visitor - both are saying that it is nothing to worry about and it will clear itself out. I was told to keep it clean and wipe it gently with surgical spirit which I have been doing so hopefuly it goes soon.
How did your visit go with your health visitor yesterday?

It could be an umblical granuloma, it's a a little bit that doesn't heal in the belly button (explains it better on the link)

Both DS1 and DD had it, and had it successfully treated with silver nitrate (but theirs was just being a pita to heal) I saw my GP rather than the HV, on her recommendation.

Thanks for the replies. I took her to the health visitor, described the problem and then duly undressed dd1 and took off her nappy, only to discover that 'it' had dropped off! The belly button now looks perfect. The health visitor seemed pretty clueless to be honest and told me to get her checked with the GP, which I have done. Certainly think it was an umbilical granuloma but has sorted itself out!

Glad it's all sorted
