Uneven leg creases in baby - do they matter any more?

Ds3 is 8 weeks old and I've just noticed he has a large crease in one thigh and not on the other side.

Ds1 had this and was referred to a paediatrician - no problem whatsoever, he was fine.

Ds3 has already had his 6 week check, I just didn't notice the crease at the time and don't remember whether the GP looked at his legs. Have things changed now? Just wondering whether I should mention it next time I see the HV.

Hi. Just wanted to say please get it checked. Sounds like you've nothing to worry about as you had a similar concern with DS1 but I know that uneven creases can be a sign of Developmental hip dysplasia (or Congenital Hip Dislocation as it used to be called) My 4 month old daughter has just finished wearing a special harness to correct a hip problem which was identified at 6 weeks on an ultrasound scan. She was only scanned beacuse I was also born with DDH and there's a strong family link. She's fine now as it's usually easy to treat when they're little but can be more complicated once they start to grow/weight bear etc.

Sorry-not trying to alarm you. I know of other babies with extra creases who have perfectly normal hips-just better to get it checked now than in a few months time.

Good luck!

Thank you so much, I wondered whether the GP had noticed it and discounted it or just not noticed it. Better safe than sorry. Hope your dd has no further problems!

My ds has uneven leg creases. He was scanned at 6 weeks as he was breech and it's standard to scan the hips of breech babies, I have been told by a friend who's a physio you only need to worry if your ds' foot starts turning outwards. So far my ds is unaffected, but I'm keeping an eye on him. The HVs have seen his leg creases and had the GP who was in the clinic at the time come and have a look and they all seemed satisfied.

uneven creases are only rarely a sign of DDH.

GP should have checked hips at 6 week check. If his legs are the same length and move outwards symmetrically there should not be a problem.

If you're worrried, go back to GP

was he a big baby?
as they have a higher chance of hip displacement
