Advice please... Ds 2yrs -how do you know if it's a chest infection?

Ds 2.5yrs has had a temperature since thursday with a nasty cough.

Gp saw him on saturday and said it was only in his upper airways.

Now monday and he is still quite weak and off his food.
His cough is much worse; very phlegmy. He sounds like an old man on 40 fags a day and his temp is still about 38.8- 39c.

I have just been cuddling him after a nasty bout of retching with the cough and am wondering if this is turning into a chest infection.
What would you advise?

Go back to gp first thing and don't worry about going back again and again if he is worsening. After 5 days he should be on the mend so it may be bacterial and need antibiotics.

I'd go back with a temp like that.

Signs of a chest infection:
raised temp
increased breathing rate
skin between ribs sucking in with each breath

(I'm not a dr, my two just have had more than their fair share of chest infections!!)

I'd take him to the drs first thing - once they have had a raised temp for 3 days they need checking, and I know you already have, but I think a repeat visit is a good idea.

HTH and hope he feels better soon

Thanks ladies.
I am watching out for the laboured breathing, but will def take him back tomorrow.
