Hi, my ds had been pulling at his nappy and sayin "willy" for a couple of days but he had a bit of nappy rash and thought that wathe problem, but when i got home from work last night he was screaming in pain and when i went to change his nappy i noticed that he was very swollen and red. I called NHS 24 and they advised me to take him to the OOH doctors. By the time we got there he had calmed down, we had given him calprofen before we left. The doctor had a look and said that it was most likely an infection or an allergic reaction. He gave us piriton and anti-biotics nd e took him home. I had to call the doctor back as there was no mixing instructions on the bottle of anti-b's. We spoke to a different doctor who was very helpful and he mentioned balanitis, which the first doctor did'nt. Anything i've read about balanitis seems to say that its the end of the penis that gets inflamed but its the base of my sons that is.

Just wondering if anyone else has seen this in their ds's.

Hmm, not sure. My son had balanitis at around that age, and it was the end of the penis that got really sore. If it is balanitis the abs should clear it up pretty fast - took about a day for DS to feel better. Poor lad - keep going with teh calprofen - I bet it's really sore for him.

hi thanks for your reply, not sure what to think. Everything i've read says that its usually at the tip of the penis but my sons is swollen and sore from the base to about half way up. I also noticed a slight white discharge when i changed his nappy so it certainly seem to be an infection of some sort. He's not complaining too much about it, just intermitantly so he can't be having too much pain. He's had 3 doses of anti-b's so far so maybe a bit too soon to see any difference. I'm going to give him a bath later but i'm afraid that the warm water might make it more sore. I keep thinking that i must have done somethimg wrong for him to have this happen to him.

you haven;t done anything......some boys get a sore penis at least once in their childhood....please don;t fret.

a bath may actually be a great thing for him. the warmth can be wonderfully soothing, and if you leave him to run about naked for a while after it will help too.

My DS1 got a very infected penis when he was still in nappies, and warm baths with lavender and then running naked helped immensely. give the anti-B's a couple more days too.

maybe some cream will be soothing too.......sudocrem is soothing.

Sounds like balinitis. We weren't given anti-b's but we were given Canesten H cream. Applying it was very stressful for all involved. We've never put bubbles in the bath since DS2 had this aged 25 months.

Poor boy - must be so sore
