Hello

My ds1 just back from day surgery to remove tonsils, he's in a fair bit of pain and still a bit groggy from all pain killers. we are giving him lots of drinks, keeping him up to date on calpol and ibuprofen, but any tips at all on how to make him feel better, or warnings about what to expect would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Ok crisps will be very important to slough off the debris from the removal of the nodes. It seems harsh , but intersperse with ice cream/icey drinks for soothing. Likewise some toast would do the same. Day 6-7 will seem like its all much worse, but this is due to the final debris coming away from the throat area, it looks like strange fluffy white stuff.

Make sure you look out for odd smells from the mouth , this may indicate an infection and may need anti biotics.

Oh and as you said , make sure you time the meds well , if they get into pain, they cant eat, then the white stuff doesnt come off and its removal healing takes a little longer.

Have they prescribed anything stronger like codeine or volterol?

Good luck with it and hope he recovers easily x

That's lovely - thanks very much, crisps are popular and the pain seems a bit better today but still using the painkillers regularly - thanks for the warning about day 6-7 that is really handy to know in advance!
Thanks
