What do you think this is - DS has lots of mouth ulcers, and rash on bum

DS has broken out with mouthful of ulcers which has left him really out of sorts, eating very little and low energy. He has also a rash on his bum - quite large red pimply spots. Any idea what this is? Thanks

I guess it could still be thrush, but hand foot and mouth seems more likely.

Thanks. i had been looking on google and the hand foot and mouth seemed to be a possibility although didnt see rash on his hands or feet but may be yet to come. should i keep him off school if it is this

I'm no expert, but DD had this and had mouth full of ulcers, but just one spot on palm. I think they should be kept out of circulation, but best to check with Dr. She was only 18mths and recovered very quickly.

The ulcers in the mouth could also be a primary coldsore infection. Has he come into contact with anyone with coldsores recently?

Not sure how that would link with the rash on bum though.

TuTu · 13/11/2008 22:25

Thanks. I will take him to doctors in morning but this may well be it. Hopefully he'll recover quickly too

Do you kno wif she has (had) one recently?

A primary coldsore infection usually occurs in teh mouth; is associated with a very high temp and very swollen glands - both in the neck and abdomen. Pretty similar to Hand foot and mouth TBH...ust no hand and foot.

If it is this (or hand foot and mouth) He will only get treatment in the first 24-48hrs....and it is not especially effective.

The key thing is to prevent dehydration. Lots of bland fluids - stay away from acidic fruits. Yoghurts and ice creams are very soothing.

Bonjela can be applied 20-30mins before eating to relieve the discomfort.

Thanks. She had one maybe a couple of weeks ago but it has gone now.
DS has no temperature but is totally under the weather. he is drinking plenty though thank goodness.

hand foot mouth (can be bum/knees/legs as well)

accordiongirl · 14/11/2008 23:55

sounds like thrush

DonutMum · 15/11/2008 14:00

Thrush, hand foot and mouth or a vitamin deficiency (one of the B vitamins, think it's B2 but google it)

belgo · 15/11/2008 14:02

hand foot and mouth. You can get it on the bottom as well as hand feet, and mouth, but it doesn't always appear in all those places.

Give him ice cream, ice lollies and calpol.
