ds1 (13) got his finger bent back today trying to catch a basketball. The first aider put ice on it, said it wasnt broken or anything and bandaged it so it was more obvious and less likely to be knocked.

have taken bandage off and its really swollen, he cant bend it fully or straighten fully.

should we do anything? should i re-bandage tomorrow for school. is it even worthy of a day off do you reckon?

I was at school with a girl who bent her fingers back, school nurse said wern't broken, x rays a day later said they were, I would take him to get it checked out.

ouch, I would probably just re-bandage and see how he gets on. he won't be able to bend/straighten it if it is very swollen, and I am not sure that hospital or anything would do anything other than bandage them together either,

but see how he goes tomorrow

HeinzSight · 13/11/2008 21:01

am cross actually at first aider saying it isn't broken, FFS does this person have xray vision . FWIW I used to teach first aid, and the GOLDEN RULE is never assume something isn't broken if unsure.

Swelling sounds suspect. Usually there isn't much that can be done for a broken finger apart from bandaging etc. But please get him checked out just in case there's a complication. He may also need strong painkillers. Poor love.

Oooh I'm so angry at that first aider grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

thanx. ds says it hurts but its not agony, doesnt want any painkillers. i suggested we see how it looks in the morning and hes happy with that.
do you think thats an o.k plan ? wouldnt want to be a negligent mother

Think it fine to wait till tomorrow. need ice, ibuprofen if possible and gentle movement ..... see how it is then A&E tomorrow if still as bad

HeinzSight · 13/11/2008 21:32

Also agree tis fine to wait til tomorrow, especially if he's not in too much pain. Try not to worry. x
