Sick bug advice please

My dd (3.5)started vomiting on Thursday afternoon and went on until 8 that evening. She was a bit better on Fri and ate a bit and seemed fine on Saturday and had a good lunch. But Sat evening she felt unwell again and vomited everywhere while asleep and frightened herself. She's eaten nothing since and has just kept down some water. She has a temperature and is very lethargic and complaining of stomach pains. We are off to the dr later.

Should I try to get her to eat something? I don't have any lemonade so could I give her some water with sugar in to perk her up.

Any advice would be great. It seems odd she's so ill again. Her younger sister had it and was sick once and is fine now.

My dds had this last week and I gave sugared water. As long as she will take some fluid she should be ok for now. Personally, if she isn't asking for food and still may vomit I wouldn't give her any just yet...

Sick bugs don't usually go on this long so you are doing the right thing going to the doctor.

On the other hand, maybe the poor thing has been really unlucky and had two different bugs, really close together.

However, in your position, with the stomach pains and the temperature I think I would be thinking urine infection. If she got dehydrated with the sick bug and she may well have picked up an infection more easily. That could be making her sick or just the fact that she has a temperature.

I wouldn't get her to eat but I would be trying to get her to take a sip of fluids every few minutes.

I hope you get some answers at the docs.

Thanks so much for the replies. She is adamant she doesn't want to eat anything and will only drink water so I have sneaked a bit of sugar in in the hope it might perk her up.

The dr's did ask me to collect a urine sample so maybe she does have an infection. I couldn't see the connection so thanks Niecie it makes sense now. She probably was dehydrated as she was sick a LOT to start with even to the point of just wretching up fluid (sorry if TMI).

Not wanting to worry you,and only posting this as you are going to the Doctors.

My DD1 was like this in January,as there was a sickness bug going around I assumed it was that.She was ill on the Thursday,I took her to Out of Hours,who thought the same.

By Monday she was no better,saw the Nurse Practictioner who thought it was maybe a UTI,gave me some Trimetheprim Antibiotics,wanted a urine specimen to confirm.As she had not been eating or drinking much and vomiting,didn't get one for 24 hour,but I now expected to see a change in 24 hours worth of antibiotics,but she seemed worse.

So I insisted on seeing GP on the Tuesday,and she listened to DD1's chest,muttered "unequal inflation of lungs",wrote a letter and told me to take her to the Paeds at the Hospital,they assessed her,and X Rayed her and she had Pneumonia!!

She stayed in for 48 hrs of I/V antibiotics,and then came home.At last she started to recover.

Make sure they check everything (the Nurse forgot to listen to her chest previously )It was very worrying.

My 'rememdy' is coke (real, not diet) - all the sugar seems to help if they can't keep anything down.

Actually yes, Sawyer is right. On several occasions with my boys I have let the doctors get away with not checking everything and they have missed something. Pre-schoolers can't always reliably tell you what is wrong.

Nothing quite so serious as Sawyer but I think they have gone in with a temperature and tummy ache or something and they have been sent home only to go back 2 days later when they weren't better to find they have an ear infection or tonsilitis (which can also make you sick and give you stomach pains).

If you they look like not ruling out everything, I would make up a symptoms - tell them your DD said her throat hurt or her chest. It will only take a moment for them to check and at least you will know for sure.

Thanks again. Oh Sawyer that must have been so worrying. I know it started as the sickness bug as her sister had it and I did a bit too, but without being sick. But it was over very quickly. I think it is something else as she is so lethargic, she just wants to lie on the floor and wont sit up at all. It seems strange that she is still so poorly after it started on Thursday.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. We are only seeing the triage nurse as the dr's are too busy but I will make sure they check everything. She was a bit off with me on the phone, obviously thinking just a sick bug and why am I bothering to call - hmph.

Bluecow I would try coke but I haven't any in the house and can't get out right now so am trying sugary water.

Oh dear she's just thrown up again - there goes the sugary water. Back to square one - roll on 5pm when we are off to drs.

Little tiny sips every hour is best,"apparently" stomach can hold very small amount without it triggering vomiting reflex.Even a mouthful or two is too much for a sensitive Tum.

Hope she is better soon.They get so weak so quickly.

Hello there, well she was thoroughly checked over and they could find nothing obvious. So she's on antibiotics just in case and has some rehydration fluid. She flaked out last night and seems brighter this morning. She's had some breakfast and its stayed down so I really hope we are over the worst. Thanks so much for all your advice its been most helpful. I've also got the bottle of coke on standby too. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel .

Like you say Sawyer they get so weak so quickly then once they can keep something down they perk up quickly too.
