Poorly ear in 2 yr old...

well hes 2 tomorrow - anyway he woke on screaming and i thought a firewrk had woke him up so after much soothing he went back off only to wake at midnight absolutly hysterical - no settling at all - gave calpol and nurofen and he went off after an hr- he always has waxy ears and noticed really really waxy later in the day as he was crying and wimpering again so took to docs who said his ear was full of rubish and prob has a small hole in it so gave anti b's. No other advice just anti bs and off we went. Should i be dooing anything else? I havent cleaned the dark brown gunk away as he wont let me near it which is fair enough. I have loaded him with calpol but my mother keeps harping on about stuffing cotton wool in there which im thinking is wrong unless bath time? Wisdom of mumsnetters i welcome please and how long do they take to fix?

no dont put cotton wool in the wax coming out needs to come out its probably the ear infection itself let it come away and when its more confortable just get warm flannel and wipe what you can see but dont stick anything in ear

its natural to have wax coming away my ds always has terrible waxy ears but i was told just clean around thats it do not use ear diggers as i call them my son saw me using one once and stuck one in his ear caused an infection as he stuck it right in bruised ear drum etc

i never use them on him and rarely on my own ears but had itch lol

i was told by gp to let infection run out not to use cotton wool hope he feels better soon

He slept well and woke at 6 excited at being 2 - opened his present and currently mesmerised by his new truck! yey! Thanks was mainly concerned with getting it wet at bath time.
