Pthalates

This morning I noticed that there is a warning on DS's door bouncer saying do not let your child chew front badge as it will leach pthalates. Am I unreasonable to think that if they know these things that maybe they should leave a silly pic of an elephant of the bloody thing? Does anyone know what the latest research is about plastics and products? I already don't buy cheap toys/made in China, don't heat anything in plastic and spend my life reading labels...is there any sort of standards agency type thing so we can look for a "safe" logo instead?
