took ds to A & E this morning as he had a really bad headache, seemed really poorly and his temperature was 38.4 despite calpol and nurofen.

his temp came down while we were there and after testing blood said it was viral and we could go home.

now, i am worrying because even though i am keeping up with the calpol and nurofen , the best his temp gets is 38.8
was 39.5 just before the calpol.

i think it will be back up to 39 + again way before midnight which is when he can have anymore medicine.

what should i do ? should i be worried and taking him back or just keep sponging im down. he is hot!!

please advise, i'm stressing out here
thanx

I'd take him back, that's really quite high and he must feel shitty.

ahh yuk. i was hoping you wouldnt say that. i have another child in bed and its always a huge wait at A & E

How old is he?

Don't sponge him, it can actually increase a temperature as it can cause shivering which creates heat.

Reduce his clothing, put a fan in the room (not directly on him though as that will make him shiver) and try and make sure he has plenty of cool (not cold) fluids.

If they have taken bloods and there is no sign of a bacterial infection then A&E may not do anything else. Obviously if he deteriorates then take him. Otherwise I would persevere with Calpol and Nurofen - are you staggering the doses? That can help. If he is no better tomorrow then see your GP.

I'd be going to A&E stressing a- the amount of medication he has had and when and b- how long he has had this for.

Not want you want to hear but better to be on the safe side than potentially have a fitting child at home

38.8 is high after meds-I would take him back.
