having heard on here its the best thing since sliced bread where i can i get one? dd has got her first bout of nits, not bad for nearly 6.

boots often sell them but any pharmacy can order them in.

Sainsburys have them now.

Sorry but i need to hijack a bit

My dd has lice/nit at mo, and i have the nitty gritty comb, do you wet hair, then put loads of conditioner on? or just conditioner neat?

Also how can you see what comes out? as i used it last night and all i could see was conditioner, also any other tips? as i went through again this morning and got another 3 lice out, with just a normal comb.

I always put conditioner on dry hair because it is less messy/work. Plonk them in front of TV add conditioner, nitty gritty away and then a bath/shower at the end to rinse of conditioner.

You need to partioner off the hair and do it in sections. Also if she is very badly infested with live lice I tend to use chemicals or to blast them. The nitty gritty is far superior and getting rid of eggs though.

I always wash the hair, condition it and then comb out the nits with the conditioner still in the hair.

I dip the comb in water in the basin each time. You can normally see the adult lice easily against the white conditioner, or when the conditioner is washed off you can see them in the comb.

Are you combing in every direction? I usually comb the opposite way from normal, ie from underneath, then normal way, then sideways, in fact every which way! And section the hair into really small sections.

Ah right, brill thanks, will have another go later, i pulled a few brown eggs out this morning too, i must not have been using it correctly.

So do you need to comb each section quite slowly?

have ordered one from nitty griity website, fingers crossed it comes soon, have took her to school this morning and told the teacher, says the school cant do anything their hands are tied, only thing is dd is allergic to them and its affecting her health, so they are either gonna have to change their 'policies' or dd will be taking alot of time off school

I have one with metal teeth called Natural clear or something - why is Nitty Gritty superior?

i have no idea whats good about it, the only ones i have are cheap plastic ones from the chemist and the one that came with the full marks stuff, the full marks one is really small so i'm hoping the nitty gritty is bigger and i want something that will last as i think this is not the last visit fromthe little buggers!

nitty gritty has corkscrews in the teeth, IYSWIM. Tears at hair IME, but also presumable tears at eggs and therefore destroys them

Nitty Gritty has a corkscrew effect on teh teeth here which means that teh teeth are effectively touching.

This means that it can get out the eggs as well as the lice. The prongs are also about 2" long so go through really think hair much better than the combs where teh teeth are about 0.5cm.

It claims that it removes or destroys 100% of eggs (and is the only product that claims to treat the eggs as well as the lice AFAIK)and lice that it comes into contact with - which I blieve based on my experience. The trick is getting it into contact with 100% of lice and eggs for it to be effective. IME it does tak practice. When I first got it I seemed to get about 75% out each time I combed (i.e. if I get about 60 out first day; next day I would get about 20 and then about 7-8...). Now I seem to get about 95% out first time, and after that I just get 1-2 stray lice. You need to comb at least every 3-4 days for 2 weeks to break the life cycle.

My method is similar to Surfermum...wash, slap on a palm full of conditioner, sit in front of tele, section and comb. It is more effective to insert the comb from all angles (I do top and sideways) to make sure you make contact with teh eggs that are stuck on the bottom of the hair shafts. Between each setion I rinse in a pint glass/clear jug of water. When I have finished let teh bugs settle for 5mins and then hold up the glass and you can see all the bugs from underneath and check how treatment is going.
