FORESKIN SURGERY

Any advice please, my DS has today seen the Consultant as his foreskin is too tight and doesn't retract enough. He is going to have an operation which involves making a small cut in the top, to loosen it. He will have this done under a General Anesthetic. Does anyone have any experience of this, very worried about whats ahead - how will they put him to sleep, how long to recover etc. I couldn't ask all these questions today as DS was listenting and is already quite hysterical about the whole thing! Hi, ds2 had a full circumcision last December due to having a tight foreskin. How old is your ds? Mine was only just 2, and there was no decent vein for them to give the GA, so he was put under with G&A. The next youngest child was about 7 or 8, and so he had a 'proper' GA, so how they give the anaesthetic will depend on how old he is and whether there's a decent vein. They shouldn't mess about as he's only a child, if they can't see a decent vein, they'll just use the gas.

Recovery will depend on your son really. I know he's not having afull circumcision but my son only took 3 days until he was fully healed - swelling & bruising both gone, but a friend had her son done at a similar time (for religious reasons) and his took over 2 weeks to heal).

DS is 4, really hoped thi wouldn't be the way to go, think it will be really upsetting to see him go under, but will grit teeth, so he doesn't see me upset, DH usually the strong one also v worried, god help us!

Really, he'll be fine. It will be hard to see him go under, I won't lie, but all the staff there will be fantastic and will look after you and give you a hug if need be when he's on the table. He'll be under for such a short time too. Be prepared though for when he comes round. If he has G&A, he shouldn't be too bad, but if he has the injection for the GA, then he may be very disorientated and confused.

You just need to remember that it's going to be so much better for him afterwards. It's only a tiny op, really it is. Stay strong & all the best for you & your ds.
