How bad is DD's eyesight?

Hello!

DD 4yo has just had her eyes tested at school and has been referred to the hospital for further investigation. Could anyone tell me if these results are likely to mean she will need glasses and how bad her eyes are?

R 0.2, 9.5 L 0.6, 24 E

Hi - I'm not sure what that means to be honest.

My DS1 has bad eyesight -2.75 in each eye which means he has to wear his glasses all the time.

Hmm. I am an optom but wouldn't expect to see numbers like that to be written down, tbh!
Usually the visual acuity is expressed as a fraction with the number 6 on the top line i.e 6/6 is normal
6/60 is poor
It can be expressed as a fraction but isn't usually unless there are different rules for school tests in the UK?

I phoned the hospital today and they wouldn't say how bad this was but that if these results are accuate then DD would need glasses. They also said that test results improve in a hospital environment in comparison to those at school. Having bad eyesight myself, I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Sometimes, children come in with poor results in a school test and then turn out to have no problems. More worryingly, I have had children turn up at age 11 with a lazy eye which should have been picked up on their school test but wasn't! So no, they're not always accurate but it is better to follow up any potential problem. Fingers crossed for your dd, but glasses are much nicer these days, even if she does need them!

DD didn't get glasses until 8yrs I felt so bad for her that it was not picked up sooner, she was gobsmacked when she first wore them out and could see all theing things I was pointing out to her, before it was just a blur and she thought thats just how it was.

She loves her glasses and sees them as a fashion accessory .

Thanks for reasurance! I guess I'm concerned because DD is so shy and sensitive and I don't want her to be teased. I used to have Deidre Barlow glasses when I was little but I guess things have moved along since then for lo's!

Just beeen to DD's first parents night at school and her teacher did wonder if there was a problem with her eyesight so obviously I'm glad this is being picked up now.

Teachers are usually right about eyesight!

Both my dds have had glasses from a very young age (dd1 16 monthe and dd2 2 and a half)
Glasses for kids are lovely nowadays. Lots of choice. My dd has some really great "red or dead" type frames which all her friends are very envious of.
