My 5months old baby constipated, help!!!

My DS has been on solids for over a months now, he is a big baby and we were advised to start weaning earlier by HV. I am also breastfeeding him. But for the last couple of days he seems to be in distress, crying a lot and can't go to the toilet. He passes lots of gas and strains a lot but nothing comes out. He is definitely in pain. Was up with him last night mostly all night as nothing seemed to help. Offered him more water which he wasn't that kin on but just desperate to help him.

Anything else I can do to help him to have his poo?

Also I introduced parsnip to him a week ago or so and he absolutely loves it, eats really a lot. So I am wondering do parsnips cause constipation?

I think you need to take him to the dr - he might need more than home remedies. But dilute orange juice might help, and he might take that better than water. Also sitting him in a warm bath can get things moving - pretty yucky, but let him poo in the bath, then whip him out once he's finished.

I know you don't need me to say this, but it's not actually true that big babies need early weaning. HVs to talk rubbish sometimes!

Thanks seeker, might give dr a call and try some juice. Do you know if prunes or prune juise is ok to give to 5 months old?

I don't know - because I'm of the nothing but milk til 6 months belief - sorry. But I do know that I was told to be very careful with prune juice for my ds when he was 12 months - so I would say no to at this age.

But do try the warm bath - it worked like (extremely messy) magic with ds when we were desperate a few times.
