DS (20 months) woke last night and had a right screaming fit for about 2 hrs on and off and eventually settled in our bed just after midnight after a cocktail of nurofen and calpol and bonjela - he seemed jolly upon waking and went to nursery as normal - on picking up noticed a sign on door mentioning hand foot and mouth outbreaks, boy has had a bit of a loose po run though put down to teething and tongiht as was whiny i calpolled him up and have put to bed upon at which time i noticed onthe end of his toes single little blisters so am thinking h f and m. So what am i to expect - worse to come? also canhe go to playgroup mon or tue next week or indeed back to nursery next wed? Does the doc need to see him and give him some magic potion or is it a diy health jobby? Thankyou.

A child in my DS class has developed this. His mum has informed me that it is highly contageous and he has been kept off school until end of the week. Usually with viruses the contageous bit is before the rash appears. Maybe keep him off a few days and see how he is. Let him get back into his sleep pattern otherwise you both will be knackered.

If in doubt about what to do I'd contact your HV or GP - they are the experts!

DS1 had this a few times from nursery. I found the worst bit is the pain from the sores in the mouth. Soft, reliable foods that he loves, lots of fluids and cuddles, and I would say come the middle to end of next week they'd accept him back (sorry, that's quite a way away, isn't it?)
