sternal recession in 5 month old

ds has sternal recession have any of your children had this.I'm seeing consultant on thursday i'm frightened

hi megandtyler - not sure if I'll be any help but will send you lots of hugs. how old is DS? and what have the doctors said so far?

I had something when I was little to do with my sternum - I had a dent in my chest for a long time, no idea what it was but I remember I had to see lots of consultants.

so not sure if that's the same thing but if it is, i'm living proof that it can turn out fine.

my dd's friend has this, funnily enough she had some investigations culminating last Thursday. Apparently her heart is off to 1 side, 1 of her lungs is distorted BUT there is no adverse affect on her health.
She MAY have to have corrective cosmetic surgery in the future as when breasts develop, they will grow toward each other.
They still feel her sternum may expand - apparently its small and soft still.
She has a HUGE fist shaped hole in her chest, she is a very timid shy child howver, this doesnt bother her at all. She is infact quite proud of it!
She eats like a bird, they say her stomach is slightly compressed too - little & often.

yes, i just grew out of mine, iyswim - as i grew up it just corrected itself.

I'm having a real wobbly day today!
Ds had to go to nicu when he was born as they thought he was too floppy with no muscle tone.he was tested for loads of stuff but they found nothing. we took him back at two months and they thought he was still lacking in tone.He had a really bad head lag and would just hang when held in a superman pose.They said they would see him again at five months.I spoke to the Hv and she referred me to physio.I saw them at four months and they said he had the tone of a five week old baby!he has since improved and the physio said he is on he bottom of the scale for his age now.It was the Hv that picked up on his sternal recession they didn't take his vest off at the last consultation so they missed it! It's not his breathing as he can blooming well scream when he wants too!!!!I'm hoping it's a muscle thing that he will grow out of but i'm frightened of the what if!!!

it's always scary when you're dealing with the unknown - try and think about it this way, they know about it now so he can be treated properly.

I know it's pointless telling you not to panic, but just try to get through the days until the consultant appointment without thinking too much about it. They'll take really good care of him.

i can cope with it normally but it's just when appointments loom that i panic

this is known as PAT - pre appointment tension. (A very wise MNetter told me that )

it's really hard to deal with, I know the feeling. deep breathing, long baths, and no thinking for too long.

ok appointment today
it went well need to go back in two months only a mild case of sternal recession not linked to a respiratory problem.may need xrays next time but a great improvement in his overall tone.
