Anyone know if there are any "rules" on when a child can return to school after a sickness/diarrhoea bug?

Poor 4.5 yr old DD was sick yesterday morning and then had a few bouts of diarrheoa yesterday afternoon and night. She's been fine in herself and it's been a battle stopping her eating everything she wants to - I've tried to keep her to a very light diet.

anyway, just wondering if I should send her to school tomorrow. She wants to go and as I said seems perfectly normal. We've had no more diarrheoa since 4 am until just now, when she did quite a runny poo (sorry TMI!).

I know at nursery they had quite strict rules, I think 48 hours after last diarrhea, but that would mean she can't go back to school til Wednesday at the earliest.

What you all think?

I dont have school experience... am sure there will be loads along in a minute who do but at ds's nursery its 24 hours since the last bout of diarrhea or sickness so I am guessing 48 hours is not the law

I'm just waiting for our first sickness bug in 18mths, we are long overdue.

Depends on the school - ring them tomorrow morning and ask them. Dd's ask for them not to be sent back until 48 hours after the last episode - although common sense needs to prevail sometimes and if dd is only sick once and then is fine, or if I think it's something she's eaten rather than a bug, I use my own judgment.

If there's a bug going round though, they won't thank you for letting her back.

Depends on teh school but TBH it is public "courtesey" to wait at least 48hrs.

I'd leave it 48 hours just because stomach bugs are so horrible so I'd hate to think of other parents sending their infectious children back early and infecting my children. We haven't had one in 18 months either so feel we are due too! They are just the worst thing ever. Last time we all had it and I had stereo vomiting from the children while I had 'two second warning' diarrhea at the same time. TMI I know.

Thanks all - School also says 48 hours - so I'll keep her off today and probably tomorrow. Just wasn't sure what to do - this is the first D&V virus DD has had in over 2 years! Hoping it doesn't last too long....

Fettle hope your DD is better. Irony or ironies both my DS1 and I now have a tummy bug. Ahhhh! After I said 'we are about due for one'. Spent last night on the loo and heaving and then between bowts moping up sick from my poor little DS1. I rang our school to ask their policy for keeping children off school (he's in reception) and the head answered and he just said 'the day after they stop the sickness'. So it just goes to show everywhere is different.

Oh Becky - I'm sorry - didn't think she'd be infectious through the internet!!

Still got DD off here as she still had very soft poos (way TMI I know!) and I didn't know if they constituted "an event" in the eyes of the school! And although she has some control and isn't running each time, I didn't like to think of her needing to go during assembly or sometime when she couldn't easily. Needless to say she's not gone once today so far and I think I probably could have sent her back - thinking about sending her this afternoon.

As for DS, who had a stomach bug 2 weeks ago, he has had 5 dirty nappies so far this morning, so think it'll be hanging around here for a while longer!! Please hope me or DH don't get it, we're supposed to going to my parents this weekend for a wedding!

Lol catching it via the internet!

My DS1 is doing the dying swan act at the moment, poor thing. DS2 is his usual bouncy flouncy self and can't cope with DS1 and me being all floppy.

I hope you don't get it - think lots of healthy positive thoughts! I can still taste my tea last night (fish and chips) yuck, yuck, yuck.
