Something strange growing inside my ds' nose - do you know what it could be please?

Over the last few weeks, i've noticed that my ds (11yo) keeps on blowing his nose but nothing seems to be coming out. This morning, i said that i would blow it as he was getting frustrated.

After i'd blown it and nothing appeared, he put his head up and pointed saying "there's a great big bogey up there - look!" When i did, i was really surprised to see a large white, lumpy growth which was attached to the outside part of his nostril. It is quite large compared to the nostril and is obviously aggravating him.

I looked up polyps and cysts online but they don't seem to fit the bill in their description, so i thought i would ask your advice.

I will make a doc's appt on Monday, but just wondered if anyone had seen this before. Thanks.

Could it be a spot or a boil? I remember my brother having a spot inside his nose and it was incredibly painful after a while.

Chocol8 · 13/09/2008 20:39

It's not painful but is large. It doesn't have a head on it, so don't think it's a spot.
I've noticed his breathing is affected by it as it is so large.

I don't think spots in noses have heads. It's pretty hard to examine closely up there, though.

Just had another look before bed and it seems to be a yellowy white colour, it looks quite dry - not mucusy and very irregular, like lots of irregular small shapes welded onto each other to make a large one.
Think i need to google images on this one, as v difficult to describe, sorry.

could be just an infection, i have a polyp (or something) in my sinus i'm a google expert at it

callmemitey · 13/09/2008 21:03

It could be a wart? Odd I know but loads of people get them, I have never heard of one up a nose but then I am not a medic of any kind.

See the GP Monday. I suspect it is no more then a wart or a load of spots all ganged up together. As a teen I used to get spots up there and they were very painful.

MadamAnt · 13/09/2008 21:04

I had infection in my nose that looked like that. It cleared on its own eventually (after months of uncomfortable scabbiness ). I should have gone to the docs.

Impetigo? I had a bubble sort of thing just under my nose once (no other symptoms I can remember)

NineYearsOfNappies · 14/09/2008 17:41

Going to sound mad but it is definitely attached isn't it? It isn't something like a piece of cauliflour or similar he's stuffed up there for some strange unknown reason and which has then just wedged itself into position?

nooka · 14/09/2008 18:09

Do 11 year olds still do that? I thought I was getting to the end of stupid experiments (I have a nine year old)

FabioBigBangBlackHole · 14/09/2008 18:12

chocol8 it does sound like a wart

I have to ask - how do you blow his nose?

Hi,

I'd try not to worry to much about it til you've seen the doctor tomorrow though if you aren't happy with the doctor's advice insist on being referred to an ENT specialist.

I had a lump in my nostril a few years ago - not a cyst or polyp but can't remember the name cos it was so long - and had it removed under general anaesthetic. Was in and out of hospital in a few hours, and could have had it done under local except i didn't want to. So it could be easily fixed.

Hope the doctor eases your mind tomorrow.

Try not to worry yet.

Here are some pictures of polyps:
