Please help, is this 'normal' nappy rash or is it fungal?

Because the gp says it isn't fungal, the hv says it is, I'm going round in circles and the rash isn't improving, aarghh.

dd is 5 months old and has had bright red angry nappy rash for a week and a half.

It is very red, pimply/spotty/bumpy, NOT in the creases at all but just over her ladybits - outer labia - and the chubby bit next to them. No rash around her anus/cheeks at all.

Been advised to use sudocrem covered with a layer of metanium (by gp), canesten (by hv), also used bepanthen, nothing improves it. It's not getting any worse as such which is good, but it's not getting better either and I'm scared it might get really sore...

So what do you think? Any replies gratefully received.

it's very red but definitely not weeping.

btw she's excl bf and not on any solids yet.

have you been leaving it to dry in the air (with no nappy)?

Yes, I leave her nappy off as much as possible and change her lots (she's in disp).

Ds1 and 2 never really suffered with nappy rash, if they ever got red I just did the above and they were fine in a day or two [flummoxed]

It happens, sometimes you just can't help it. Sometimes you can't beat the advice from a chemist. They know loads. I would take her to them so they can have a peak. They may be able to help. I would also take her back to a different GP.
ds had really bad nappy rash when he was in hospital, I tried everything but zinc znd caster oil worked really well. You can get a tub from boots. It needs a few days to see any difference though.

I will try a different gp on Monday when the dses are at preschool, that's a good idea about trying the chemist too, hadn't thought of that.

belgo it's bumpy with red pimples at the edges. gp says if fungal it would be in the creases too (it's not) but hv disagrees.

Can be fungal or bacterial, which would cause it to blister and weep. It's hard to tell from a description, which is why I suggested you go and see the chemist.

no it's not necessarily in the creases. The cause of nappy rash is very hard to diagnose, I personally would continue using the canestan.

I don't know what bepanthan is though I can't comment on that.

I swear by Metanium (Bepanthen or Zinc&Castor oil) for every day) when dd's bum gets red and/or pimply - though not on top of a layer of Sudocrem! Just a thin layer of Metanium and it should calm it down.

I have some Daktarin cream (like Canestan) that I use if I think it might be fungal (raised red spots - sometimes look a bit white). I put that on - let it dry - then put Metanium on top. 9 times out of 10 it works.

I know it's really impossible to say from me describing it, was just hoping someone would have a miracle answer really! (deluded I know). Will ask the chemist on Monday I think and maybe gp too. Thanks for the replies

hi meep, I've got some daktarin in the cupboard from when we thought she had oral thrush at a few weeks old (she hadn't), but it's called 'oral gel' so I'd better wait to see what the gp/chemist say on Monday. Never had this with the dses, there's always something new to throw you isn't there!
