DD has had a horrible nappy rash for 6 days, and now it's peeling

I took her to the doctor, and she prescribed clotrimazole. I've been using it for 4 days, with not much improvement. Been giving her plenty of nappy free time and wiping her with cotton wool and water. Tonight, the edges of the rash has started peeling off, it looks like skin after sunburn. Any idea what could cause this? Thanks.

is it definitely not thrush? have you tried canesten?

Clotrimazole is an antifungal treatment I think? Which means your GP thinks thrush infection?

It can get worse before better if thrush but if it doesn't respond to that treatment ask your doctor for a skin protecting spray such as used on bed sores - we used Cavilon when DS2 got bleeding sores from nappy rash. it's a polymer spray which essentially 'varnishes' the bum until the sores have healed.

Drastic but when the damp urine and poo is not helping the healing this kind of thing is a lifesaver...

Clotrimazole is the active ingredient in Canesten, so the GP is assuming it's thrush, or a fungal infection.

DS2 had a horrific case of nappy rash at less than a week old His skin bubbled and then peeled. The peeling was the end of it though thankfully.

I used lansinoh to soften the sore skin a bit.

Are you bfing? Do you have thrush at the moment?

Sorry, got distracted whilst writing op! I have been using metanium in between the clotrimazole uses. The rash looks a bit less angry than it did, but the peeling is freaking me out! If I rub the skin where the rash is the top layer of skin just comes off. It doesn't look raw or open though.

I might just leave her nappy off for most of the day tomorrow and let a load of air get to it. I'll put the cream on at naptimes and bedtime and just put nappies on then. Bloody one thing after another at the mo!

xpost. Yes I am bfing. I thought I was gettign thrush but no symptoms in either of us (apart from DD's nappy rash, obv). I had tried loads of other creams and nothing had worked, so I think that's why the doc gave the clotrimazole. Hopefully it's just the end of the rash then, and the peeling is just the damaged skin coming off. Will put a bit of lansinoh on it tomorrow.

a fab cream to use inbetween is called morhulin. if it's not in your local chemists they should order it for you. boots did and it only took a day to get there.

I think you have to use the antifungal creams twice a day for 2 weeks - well that is what we have been recommended for DS1's thrush patch anyway.

Our doctor did say not to use any creams like E45, I thought maybe it was due to the lanolin content - so maybe avoid the Lansinoh on this occasion. We have a cream from Boots called Unguentum M which is a rich moisturiser for eczema which the doctor said to continue using during the day between the application of the other cream.

Oh yes, I remember something about Lansinoh not being good for thrush (warmth, moisture etc.) If it even is thrush I'll stick with the cream for a while longer and see how it goes. The doc didn't tell me how longer to use it for, but I'll stick with it for 2 weeks. I might hunt out that cream, nappyaddict, for future nappy rashes.
