My three year old is getting very upset about sparkles. Could it be an eye problem?

DS1 is getting very upset particularly at night time about seeing sparkles. I thought he was just being silly ut it keeps coming up and my in laws mentioned that the same happened when he was with them.

Now I'm worried that I should have paid more attention and that either he's being visited by aliens at night (well you never know!) or that maybe its something wrong with his eyes? Does anyone know what it might be?

Get him checked out.

I had the same thing some years ago and they tested the pressure inside the eyeball (I believe - I am a bit hazy on the details now). There was nothing wrong in my case but it was a very easy test; drops to dilate the pupils and then a jet of air squirted at the eyeball.

Does he mean floaters? I would get his eyes checked, he should be about due for his first eye test anyway so mention it to them.

Has he been sick since? Had a headache? Can be a symptom of migraine.

fishnet, do get him checked out, just in case. It may be nothing but it could be indicative of an eye problem or as TBGP says, migraine. Or it could possibly be nothing at all but best to err on the side of caution.

Could it possibly be his pyjamas doing that static thing with the duvet cover?

Its not static. I sat with him last night for a bit in case the sparkles came and he said they did. When I told him I couldn't see them he said it was because I haven't got clever eyes.

When I was younger, and also now as I'm pregnant, I would often get 'sparkles' in my vision when I did a cartwheel or handstand or something. They were like tiny silver stars that floated about in my peripheral vision when I righted myself (after handstand for eg), or stood up quickly. They never last long, 10 seconds or so. I've always had low blood pressure, and it's plummeted since I've been pregnant, and I've always assumed it was something to do with that.
