Wriggly Bottom Critters.........worm novice needs some advice

DH has been out fishing with DS today. At one point DS needed a poo. DH was standing behind him and said that (TMI alert) when his poo hit the ground it rolled a bit in the grass. When it stopped there was a white wriggly thing in it about 5mm long. He's not sure if it was something lying in the grass that got rolled up in the poo, or whether it was in the poo on exit from DSs bottom.

I'm cringing just thinking about it . Neither DH nor I have come across bottom critters of any description before so would appreciate any MN collective advice.

And before anyone else does it, I googled worms before posting and will be having nightmares tonight.

Go to the pharmacy, get Ovex (or equivalent) to dose your whole family. Repeat dose in 2 weeks.

Meanwhile, change sheets, towels and pyjamas and put in a hot wash.

Keep fingernails cut short and another good idea is to bath your ds in the mornings to rid him of any eggs which may have hatched out in the night.

it's nothing to worry about sweetheart, just not very pleasant thign to think about that's all.

go and see your local pharmacist and they will advise you properly.

and how do we break it to DS? he will be horrified.......on the other hand, he might think it's pretty cool.

not sure. i'm not sure what the ovex is like but maybe if you get the pripsen one you can pass it off as a juice?

i dont think you or dd can be treated but still ask! when jack got them last year we washed every day bed sheets pjs, towls ect we showerd him every morning and every night, but he hated the iching we put sudacrem on his bum it helped ease the iching, me and dh didnt treat our selfs but was ok never got it, but i kept washing the beddding up to 5 weeeks

and we put ds in pants for bed to, as well as pjs cos i read when you take clothes off the eggs go every where, so carfully we took his pants of every morning .

apparently he saw the worm, but is in denial that it came out of his bottom. He says he isn't itchy at all, but that could be part of his denial about it.

I'll go see the doc tomorrow as I need to see him about my pregnancy anyway.

and why is the thought of them making me itchy?

not sure it would be very courteous to take our diseased bottoms to andie's house and leave her some unwelcome guests

Sympathies! dd1 had threadworm last winter, urgh.

You can take Pripsen (piperazine, not mebendazole) if you are pregnant, ditto kids under 2 yrs of age. ds and dh can take Ovex.

Be careful not to shake bedding when changing, as eggs dry and get into the air where they can be inhaled (yuk) and then swallowed.

I suppose there's an outside chance a small white worm was hanging around the grass when a poo landed on him, but odds are its threadworm....

lol elibean that's just what DH and I said. As they were fishing he's convinced it escaped from someone's bait box....although what sort of fish you would catch with a 5mm long very skinny worm or how you would even get it on the hook, I just don't know

I would think so - wondered same thing when dd1 had them, and kept a close eye on dd2's nappies ever since: not a sign of 'em.

You can be treated when pregnant but you need PRIPSEN not Ovex. Different drugs one ok one not. Check with pharmacist when you buy. You will need secnd treatment in 2 weeks

Oh and they a very coomon 1/10 kids hav ethem at anytime .

got a prescription from the GP for DS. He said he would only treat the rest of the family if we had found anything ourselves. DD's nappies are clear of worms and I don't have any symptoms of them; same with DH. So, DS has been dewormed and has enough for the next dose and a few more as well should we get a recurrence!
