Ear pain but no infection or wax

10yo has had ear pain in both ears on and off for years, her ears do get very waxy, sometimes it’s been ear infections and antibiotics has helped. However her recent “flare up” (for want of a better word) there’s no infection or excessive wax, so the doctor has referred her to ENT. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this and knows what it could be? Thanks.

My daughter when she was about 2 and a half had a horrendous ear infection. The doctor said they looked fine but it was so deep within the ear canal that it couldn’t be spotted with the general inspection instrument. It burst the following day and she had about 2 days of horrible liquid seeping out. My eldest daughter in latter years had ongoing ear infections that the doctor didn’t spot, as he hadn’t looked into her ear canal during the first few appointments. I think antibiotics are the general route but I would definitely be pushing for thorough examination as it can present as the whole body feeling unwell.
Best of luck, anything in your head, pain wise is the worse

I may well be wrong but I seem to remember the bones in the ear canal aren’t fully formed at that age which can cause flare ups
