9 year old shingles

My 9 year old DS has confirmed shingles. Small patch on his torso started on Saturday confirmed my out of hours GP Sunday. He was also reviewed on Tuesday as the rash spread significantly. Didn't give any treatment such as anti virals because at the time my DS was coping. 5 days later and he's in agony, he's been on consistent 4 hourly doses of Calpol because half an hour before he's due his next dose he is screaming in pain. Won't let us apply cream to rash as he screams out. Is there really nothing we can do? He's in agony. I've never known him like this. Thank you.

I'm really sorry, my daughter aged 3 had this and was poorly for a week. We did give antivirals even though we started them later than 72 hours just because of her age. Can you give ibuprofen as well?

She also got a skin infection in the shingles themselves so needed antibiotics...any chance the rash could be infected? The skin around became red and hot.

Call 111 and see if there are any other painkillers to try.

Miserable. Sending sympathy.

Thank you for replying. I've read not to give ibuprofen with shingles, I might be wrong though. It's honestly awful, he's just woken up screaming. No obvious signs of infection but I don't think I'm overreacting if I ask him to be reviewed again tomorrow?

Your poor daughter, that must have been scary.

Might end up being time for the antivirals, they’re not nice though so he will end up feeling awful
for some time. Sending love 💐

I’m surprised they didn’t give anti virals, I was given them straight away both times I had shingles. Be careful with the amount of calpol you’re giving. You can only have 4 doses in 24 hours.

Shingles can be incredibly painful as it runs along a nerve path. I would get him re looked at. You can’t give ibuprofen for chicken pox, not shingles.
