DD is nearly 2 and developed symptoms of hand foot and mouth on Sunday. No problem she’s had it before and we treat with Calpol and cuddles.

on Monday she stopped eating and fluid intake reduced so I took her to the GP who prescribed difflam spray. On Tuesday she stopped drinking altogether. No water, juice, cows milk, breastmilk, squash, calippo, smoothie, yoghurt. Won’t take an open cup, supply cup, straw cup, bottle. We eventually managed to syringe about 30ml into her before she became really distressed. She hadn’t weed for 12 hours by this point so I called 111, we went to out of hours and got admitted to children’s ward for a fluid challenge.

they gave more difflam, managed to get 30ml of squash into her, she did a tiny wee and they discharged us. But she still won’t drink. She had one breastfeed this morning and then has had extremely milky weetabix a few times today (the weetabix at her request, the extra milk my attempt to smuggle more fluid.) I’m at a bit of a loss. We have open access to call the ward for another 24 hours but they weren’t all that bothered last time so I don’t know if they would be this time. I don’t even think it’s a pain thing anymore as she much more herself, playing etc today and doesn’t even let the drink get to her lips now.

She had had wet nappies today but at a reduced rate than normal. Any advice most welcome!

DD also stopped drinking (years ago) when she had HFM.

We took the same approach as you, syringing in 5ml doses of water, and plenty of wet food (cucumber, milky cereal, strawberries, cut grapes), we also bought some Ella’s Kitchen fruit pouches as an easy way to get liquid into her.

As long as she’s getting liquid from her diet, and her pee is ok (not dark, still a couple/few times a day), it’ll pass.
