Hi everyone,
I’m wondering if anyone’s child has been prescribed azithromycin before going down the route of having grommets fitted for glue ear?
My little boy is 19 months old and has had recurrent ear infections over the past few months. We’ve recently had private audiology, which showed Type C tympanograms in both ears, evidence of previous glue ear, and dull eardrums with some scarring. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to complete a hearing test because he wouldn’t cooperate.
I’ve also noticed changes in his development and communication, including reduced babbling, inconsistent response to his name and not following instructions as consistently as before. I’m really concerned that fluctuating or muffled hearing could be contributing.
We saw an ENT consultant today, who has prescribed azithromycin, initially once daily and then twice weekly for four weeks, to see whether this helps before considering grommets. He’s also being referred for a more detailed NHS hearing test and will be reviewed again in three months.
I was wondering if this is something other ENTs have tried before recommending grommets, and whether it actually made a difference.
I’d particularly love to hear from anyone who:
- Was prescribed azithromycin for glue ear before having grommets fitted.
- Had a similar dosing schedule and noticed an improvement in their child’s ears or hearing.
- Managed to avoid grommets because the treatment worked.
- Noticed improvements in speech, babbling, response to name or understanding afterwards.
I completely understand that every child is different, but I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences, especially if this approach worked for your little one.
Thank you ❤️
