Blistering nappy rash

My DS who is 2 had a tummy bug a few weeks ago and is having explosive diarrhoea multiple times per day since then. Despite using water/cotton wool, barrier creams etc his skin is so sore and he has some large blisters.

Is there anything we can do besides letting this run its course? We’ve started potty training as the nappies clearly aren’t helping but it’s difficult as he’s not really ready. I sent a stool sample to the gp but have heard nothing back so presuming it’s fine. I feel so sorry for him.

I used Cavilon barrier film spray on my DS’ bum when he had terrible nappy rash, it worked much better than barrier cream because it leaves an actual film barrier over the sore bits rather than a cream that just rubs off inside the nappy.

I think you might need to see a Dr if he has blisters tbh. My DD had this when she was about six months. The Dr prescribed some antibiotic cream.

It sounds thoroughly miserable for you and your DS.

Blisters on the bum turned into hand food and mouth a number of times for us

GP can prescribe antibiotics/anti fungal cream/steroid cream depending on what's needed

I took my 1 year old to the doctors a couple of days ago with a blistering nappy rash because I thought she might an antibiotic cream. Turns out it was hand, foot and mouth. She literally had one blister on her tongue and a ton in her nappy area and that was it - had no idea that was a thing!

He's still having explosive diarrhoea multiple times a day? I'd take him back to the GP.

It’s definitely not hand foot and mouth, he’s had that several times and this looks different, it started as nappy rash which has now got very bad because of the repeated diarrhoea episodes! Yes when he’s had HFM before the spots have always been on his nappy area but these aren’t spots they are blisters, quite large and irregular shaped, probably the size of a 10p.

I think I will call the gp again today.

Have you tried Vaseline? I had to use that when my LO had bleeding nappy rash as a newborn, and again with bad HFMD

Potty training is ultimately the best solution, if nothing else it lets LO have nappy free time. Other people on Mumsnet recommended letting LO play in a dry bath with bath crayons to give extra nappy free time when they aren't potty trained and it's cold outside.

I’ve always found this stuff to be miraculous. But really, he needs air to it.
