Eczema help!

My 7 month old has had this rash for the past 5/6 weeks now and nothing seems to help. She was born with clear skin and has had no issues until around age 6 months. The rash is only round her mouth, under the chin, torso, upper arms and back. Her legs are completely clear.

She’s been to the doctor 5 times about the rash. Initially they thought it was fungal but now they say it’s eczema and have prescribed different creams but none seem to be working.

She’s had canesten, timodine, qv, aveeno, hydrocortisone but if anything I feel they make her skin worse.

She is only bathed 1/2 times per week using a prescribed emollient or Aveeno. No changes in laundry detergent and we don’t use any other creams or lotions on her. She has started weaning but she mostly has vegetables, not allergens.

Her skin doesn’t feel that dry and it isn’t flaky? It didn’t seem to bother her until a few days ago and she keeps scratching and picking at it.

I have no idea if this is eczema, an allergy or something else or what can be done to help as it looks so sore on her skin and she screams so bad when applying cream. Thanks!

I’ve had two have eczema. There isn’t a long term answer but many do outgrow it. Can I just say though to please please research before you use hydrocortisone again or any steroid. The damage they did to my children was awful. It’s not a harmless cream but a station that is absorbed into the body and does damage to the adrenal axis, the immune system, the endocrine system and latest research now shows damage to the mitochondria. The rebounds effects from these creams will spread all over the skin looking like worsening eczema but is being caused by the station creams. Look up ITSAN and latest research by Dr Ian Myles. Also Dr Rapaport. Try to eliminate various things one at a time to see if there’s a reaction to certain fruits or dairy perhaps? I hope it gets better soon but I really wish someone had warned me about steroid creams before I’d used them. Withdrawal from them is a miserable itchy oozy time.

The only thing that helps my eczema flare-ups is either Tacrolimus or Pimecrolimus. You will need the milder paediatric doses if you do try them.

These creams/ointments 'Topical Calcineurin Inhibitors (TCIs)' and act as non-steroidal alternatives to topical corticosteroids. There are a few brand names like Protopic and Elidel. They need to be applied sparingly, carefully and gently, along with emollients like Epimax. Always check you've been prescribed the milder doses!

For a good way of tackling any fungal and bacterial involvement, maybe try washing with Hibiwash, which pharmacies like Boots sell (and you can also order it online). Good luck Flowers - I know it's really hard.

It could definitely be allergy. Cut out dairy and soya for 6 weeks and see what happens. If nothing changes maybe try removing egg as well. There’s no point getting tests at this age as they are very unreliable under 18 months. My eldest came back as fine for dairy and carries epi pens for it now. By 18 months all her skin prick tests were accurate.

Look up how to wean from steroids properly - you may need to carry on “weekend treatment” for a few months to clear it even if there are no allergens involved

I would definitely work on isolating dietary changes, with a return to (bottle) feeding if necessary
