My 15m old has caught HFM - it’s on his mouth/ up his nose/ ears/ legs/ hands and neck.
It is SO sore for him, i’m doing calpol / nurofen / oat baths - but is there anything else i can do to help!? also are the spots supposed to scab / crust??? i’ll attach a pic of his face spots as im concerned they look slightly infected??? (excuse the breakfast in his mouth it’s the only time i could snap a pic)
Any help appreciated

Spots usually crust within 4 or 5 days. Keep an eye on it though if it stays wet. Impetigo sometimes follows on from hfm & needs antibiotics.

Oh that looks rough. My little one had it last month. Pharmacy gave us piriton to help with any itching and I was recommended Bonjela Jr, it has lidocaine in it which helps.
We also had to watch what to give her as certain foods can obviously hurt. So avoid things like tomato pasta and tangy yoghurts

And yes I think they are supposed to crust because we were told no nursery until they had all crusted over.

OtterMummy2024 · 09/10/2026 14:12

With the crustiness, I would be tempted to see the GP or pharmacist. That's what than any occasion that my child has had it. Poor wee thing, I hope he feels better soon!

Be prepared for the child to loose finger nails.....

Awful illness. Hugs

Sophie3003 · 09/10/2026 16:19

We were also prescribed difflam to spray in the mouth to give relief from the discomfort. A horrible illness, my little girl felt so poorly. Bless him that it has turned to impetigo, we were on the cusp of that too. I hope he feels better soon.
