Anyone have experience of child with broken femur and returning to school?

My 12 year old broke his femur and had surgery with an internal plate 3 weeks ago, non weight bearing for another 3 weeks and no cast, no pain meds now either. He's eager to go back to school, the doctors say when we're ready but I dont know if its too soon. Anyone had similar experiences with their child? How long were they off school for?

30 years ago I was this child aged 12. I had my accident on Jul 15th so had weeks of summer holidays to recover before going back to school. Obviously my memories are now hazy but the things I remember most are that a friend helped carry my bag and carried my lunch tray as I was walking on crutches at that point. I don’t know how long this happened for. Given that I don’t remember struggling to get round or anything I would say that those practicalities were pretty key. I would say he can go back at the point that you have a robust plan for how he will tackle anything that isn’t sitting/listening. Getting out of the house & going to school will be much more significant than pottering round the house when you break it down as to what’s actually involved.

perhaps contact the school see if they think he could manage. perhaps contact his school mates tell them he wants to come back but he may need some help

This happened to my 4 year old. Different because yours is 12 and we had a spica cast. Cast came off, non weight bearing and unable to walk for around 6 weeks. I sent him back after Xmas holidays and he broke it early September. So around 4 months in total. School were clear that he had to be safe to jump and able to walk and use toilet etc. school did not want to carry any risk. I would call school and speak to them and speak to your consultant and ask advice.
