Childhood tics

I was wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar.
My 6 year old daughter has recently started having some tics. I noticed she was often tapping surfaces/ cars/ me with forearm or hand and this evening after I brought it up she was jumping, tapping her feet and moving her lega when sat down.
I have read online that they could be complex motor tics

My son had tics when he was in primary school, I took him to the doctor's because I was worried about Tourette's, but they said he'd grow out of them, which is has in the main. I notice him twitching a bit when he's stressed, but nothing too bad.

I always tap/move/rock/fidget. I think I probably have adhd. It’s only tics if she can’t stop/control them I think. Can she stop if you ask her to? Even if she starts again a few moments later. I think mine are my way of masking my energy.

My DD has had some tics since she was about 6/7. Each one seems to last a few months and then goes away. Sometimes she finds them distressing/annoying - eg repetitive thoughts or breathing tics - but we try to help her stay relaxed and not make a big deal out of them. This was the advice of our doctor.

Sometimes it is tics, sometimes the child is stimming- see above. It’s figuring out which it is. If it is tics it is actually very common and they usually grow out of it by pre teenage years. It’s only treated if it’s life interfering and usually in teenage years. I can’t remember what the criteria for Tourette’s or tic disorder is but you could look it up. Tics by themselves are not usually a problem. Stimming goes alongside other neurodevelopmental conditions like autism and adhd. It could be that that is what you are seeing but there would be other signs and difficulties.

Thanks for your replies. I have thought about possible adhd. She is very bright but does have big emotions at home. I do feel like what are is doing are tics though. She is aware of them and tries to make excuses for them, I suppose that is a way of making her feel in control ( even though she isn

As above, it could be a stick or a tic. We had great success with high dose magnesium supplements with my DS when he started with facial tics ages 7/8.

thank you. I have ordered a magnesium supplement.

Thanks for your replies.
My husband thinks it is more ocd and the “just right” theory. I have noticed today if she brushes past something she will then tap it and sometimes she will tap with one arm and then the other.
She has displayed OCD tendencies in the past, like she won’t sleep in a bed if the covers have a stain or mark, went through a stage of washing hands loads.
Husband not concerned at all and says he wouldn’t have noticed if I hadn’t mentioned it. I have undiagnosed OCD and remember doing similar rituals but in my head. I have also been diagnosed with anxiety but I think it is more ocd or adhd.
