Swollen Thyroid Gland

Morning everyone, my 14 year old DD found a large lump on her neck quite a few weeks ago which she only told us about last week, she didn't want to upset me - I'm recently recovering from breast cancer. Anyway got her to the doctor who is sending her for an urgent scan, bloods and this morning we are going for an ECG. She thinks that it is the thyroid gland that is swollen as she can feel it but didn't really say much more. I'm trying not to worry about it but does all sound concerning, DD has lost weight recently but she has been healthy eating and doing more exercise, and feeling a bit dizzy which I put down to lack of iron? I assume this could mean an over or under active thyroid gland? Thanks xx

Looking back I had a goitre when I was around 18, but I never thought to see anyone about it as it didn’t affect me. It disappeared at some point, and then I developed underactive thyroid in my 30’s. Hopefully it will all be OK.

I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism in my early 20's, no lump but other symptoms: eating tons but losing weight, my periods stopped eventually. I had Graves Disease (very over active thyroid). Easily treated.

My friend was diagnosed after her GP noticed a lump on her neck at about the same age. She was there for an unrelated medical issue. The lump had actually been there for years; friend and her parents just thought it was part of her make up but the GP said she wanted to scan it. Both of us had radioactive iodine treatment.

My grandmother also had thyroid problems and had a goiter removed surgically (nowadays they tend to treat with with the radioactive iodine; just a pill you swallow and may need to isolate for a few days).

All the best, OP.

Thanks for your replies they are reassuring that it is easily treated, forgot she got quite down at the end of last year for no reason, and tired etc again could be symptons.

Never had the ECG got to the surgery and the doctor said it wasn't necessary at this stage and wait to see what the blood test results say, so total waste of time!
