4.5 old saying his heart is “bumpy”?

Twice now about a week apart my 4.5 son has said “my heart is better now” and second time “my heart is better, it’s not bumpy anymore”. First time he was just in our house and his aunt/uncle & older cousins were round. I think his uncle was having a little bit of horseplay with him but nothing too strenuous. The second time was when my husband picked him up from After Schools club so we don’t know if he was exercising or what (he was a little sweaty but he’s a redhead so he’s always sweaty in summer!). Is this just him becoming aware of his heart beating faster or a real cause for concern? He is otherwise totally normal, just maybe a bit tired but has just started school & BB for the first time.

Sounds like he is aware when his heart is beating faster. If it’s a recent thing it might be something staff have made the class aware of during P.E. lessons.
Probably his way of describing it. Unless any symptoms I wouldn’t worry.

I would get this checked out. Underlying unknown heart defects can be fatal. Better to be safe than sorry.
Atrial fibrillation can be described as bumpy.

Im sure its just normal heartbeat he can feel but my son (teenager, much older) developed supraventricular tachycardia with atrial fibrillation in the last couple of years and he described it as feeling his heart thumping or bumping when he had an episode. He's just had surgery to fix the issue. Don't want to worry you as its probably just him becoming aware of his own heartbeat but probably worth getting him checked at doctors if it keeps happening.

Could be totally normal and he’s just extra aware of it. But I’d get it checked out. No harm at all in getting a check up for your own peace of mind and to rule out other causes. We have a history of heart problems in my family. So my motto is better safe than sorry

My 4 year old is asthmatic and sometimes his inhaler makes his heart beat really fast (200+).
Bumpy is the exact word ge uses to describe it.
Maybe ask him to tell you next time it feels bumpy and you can check his heartrate? It probably is just him feeling it beating faster after exercise but no harm in checking in with it. Its also quite an interesting science experiment for a 4 year old- feeling their heart rate go from normal to fast and back to normal!

Thanks everyone. I’ll def keep a close eye on him, I’ve told him to tell me if it happens again, if he says it again I’ll take him to the doctor. He seems absolutely 100% 👍
