Advice needed on travel and childcare with baby in spica cast

My 10 month old has DDH. She had her closed reduction last week and is now in her spica cast. Due to how she’s been casted, she doesn’t fit in any of the adapted car seat / normal ones. I’m now completely stuck, I am going to be paying 2 lots of childcare that’s not being used whilst potentially working from home as I’m unable to take 12 weeks off. Anyone else been in this situation? Any advice?

Not sure if you’ve already done this so sorry if so, but have you tried the In Car Safety Centre to see if their spica rental car seat would be suitable?

My DD had this op and a spica cast many years ago! Over 20 years now. I wish I remember which car seat we used… it was a toddler one. She attended nursery as usual, they were great. I’m sorry about your paying 2 x childcare, Adda insult to injury. They were testing times, i bought a special handled tricycle which she loved and we adapted a trolley crate thing full of bricks to ride her along. The Tripp Trappola chair was handy and a friend whose Dd had experienced the same lent me her buggy.

I was working FT. Somehow we bumbled through but it was hard! Please ask if you want more info. I was so scared at the time but she grew up to be the most remarkable sportsperson and you’d never tell! The charity STEPPS had a useful website but I don’t know if they still exist.

That’s who we’ve rented the britax seat with☹️ the only other 1 that we could try would be the maxi cosi hip service but their wait list is currently 8-12 weeks and her cost will be off in 12 weeks. It’s just the prospect of paying 2 lots of childcare thats not being used that’s really bumming me out 😩

Hey! Thank you for your comment! So I’ve been on the Steps site and they recommend the Care Safety UK which we’ve then used to rent the britax chair which she doesn’t fit in at all. The maxi cosi seat is on a 8-12 wait list too☹️ we’ve then bought 2 other seats that other spica parents have used with slights mods but again, no luck☹️ this first weeks been rough and the next 11 are going to be too but the idea of paying £1k a month in childcare that nots being used knocks me sideways especially as I’ve not long returned to work following mat leave so things are already tight as it is, do you have any other tricks to make this more enjoyable for her? Weve covered the pram, spica and modified a few different chairs so that she’s able to play and join in with their sibling

Hello! Sorry for typos. You reminded me that it was one of the Britax car seats that we used. Tbh at the time we drove little and took a lot of walks in the pushchair to make the time fly a bit. That sucks re childcare. Could you look at the contract - would they consider a compromise? Would your home insurance cover it? Long shot I know. Could she even attend as normal? Our nursery was very good at adapting so Dd went as normal & I went back to work. After 6 months she was out of the big Spica and into a lighter, half leg version. I remember using a baby bath to clean her and then taking her to swimming lessons as she became fearful of the bath. I bought a stack of bigger dresses to go over the cast. We had a lot of activities to distract both her and me!
