My 4 year old is due to go in next week to have her tonsils out. I am so worried about it and keep having nightmares about things like post op bleeds.
can anyone give me any advice on the recovery?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

When giving her food, post op, make sure it is just tepid, as eating hot food is not advisable while healing. Also I would just give them water to drink, no sugary, or fizzy drinks.

they wouldn't be suggesting it if they though it was particularly high risk.

IIRC only about 5ish% have bleeding post op and only 1% need a second procedure. Have anaesthetised fairly regularly for tonsils for nearly 20 years and can't remember the last time I saw a 'proper' bleed.

Eating and drinking as normal is generally encouraged post-op (aside from avoiding hot food/drinks immediately post op) and eating normally reduces the risk of infection/bleeding.
Most important is that even if you're feeling nervous, you need to manage that if you do decide to go ahead. Kids pick up on their parents' anxiety and it can make the whole experience much harder for them.

I am actually a nurse albeit i work with older adults so i am usually good at hiding anxiety from the kids and can remain calm in stressful situations.
This is the first time she has needed any medical procedures which is why i have been worrying so much. Thank you for taking time ti respond it has really reassured me.
