12 month vaccine reaction - please help!

My LO received his 12 month injections on 14th July. We were given the usual leaflet on how to administer paracetamol and told that the MRRV can have a delayed reaction.

On Tuesday 28th July we attended the GP for a separate issue and were referred to paediatrics because LO had a fever of 38.8. Spent 4 hours in the waiting room to be told that’s usual with the vaccine and the GP was over cautious.

It’s now 7 days later so 14 days after the round of vaccines and we are still fighting a daily fever around 40 each day. LO is given paracetamol and ibuprofen on rotation.

He’s off his food, developed diarrhoea for the last 6 days and is generally miserable if conscious at the minute.

Has anyone else experienced a reaction like this to the vaccines and how long did it take to resolve? I’ll be honest the idea that we have to put him through this again at 18 months is terrifying me.

Is there a typo in your post? My understanding is that:

• Injections were given on 14th July
• You went to the GP and were referred to paediatrics on Tues 21st July NOT 28th
• The fever has been present every day for the last 7 days

Is that correct? Assuming so,

• The paediatrician was correct that the MMRV (measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella aka chickenpox) vaccine can cause a delayed fever.
• However, the NHS recommends that if the fever lasts for more than 3 days, you should seek further medical attention.

My advice would be to call 111 and go from there. Of course, your LO may have a badly-timed fever that is nothing to do with the vaccine so mention any and all other symptoms to 111. The more info you give the better, even if it seems unimportant.

I would just say that my child has also had multiple days of high fever this week, and has NOT had a vaccine. There's something viral and unpleasant going around. While the fever has now gone, I am on day 8 of a miserable toddler.

2 weeks of high temperature? You definitely need to see a doctor.
